Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

My background is gallbladder removed 5 years ago. No problems until 3+ years later
Acid reflux reared its ugly head. After endoscopy I was told I had lots bile in my stomach and put on Omeprazole.I believe I suffer from acid AND bile reflux. All seemed well after a while but after reading of long use side effects I weaned myself off Omeprazole slowly by opening the capsules and reducing the amount of little balls I took. I got down to 5mg a day

Then I had a bad attack and upped my dose again. The next thing to happen was upper right quadrant pain, just under the ribs where the gallbladder had been. Ultrasound on liver and bile ducts didn't reveal anything

I tried other PPI'S...made no difference

Then I had another endoscopy. The literature said to not take any PPI'S for 10 days prior to the procedure
I now think this caused massive rebound reflux. Some Doctors poo poo this but I can tell you it's real!!!!
The result of the endoscopy was Gastritis of the stomach and Duodenitis...and boy did I know about it

Extreme bloating, unpleasant gnawing feeling in the stomach, nausea, foggy head, stiff neck/headache and a feeling of utter exhaustion....and of course the upper right quadrant pain (possibly too much info but also had black stools)
I was now on 20mg of Omeprazole morning and night and in desperation I went to the Doctor to request the dosage be dropped as I suspected the medication wasn't suitable for me. She was shocked and said why would I want to do that when my symptoms were severe

Upshot is that she changed my medication to Esomeprazole (Nexium)
Five days in the only symptom I'm left with is the upper right quadrant pain which isn't as severe

So, my message is trust your gut feelings. It seems to me that some PPI'S actually cause the symptoms they're supposed to treat...but you CAN find one that helps. Also never just stop taking them! Rebound acid reflux is something to avoid, believe me!

I still aim to wean down to the lowest dose possible

I think PPI'S have a place (especially in the case of Barratts Oesophagus) but are mostly meant to be short term
Long term they can deplete the body of calcium causing fractures, also of Vit B12. They can also cause multiple polyps

Self help measures

Avoid food triggers...some common ones are tomato based products, mint, chocolate, fizzy drinks, coffee and fatty foods. keep a food diary as everyone's different. I can no longer eat fruit cake

Smaller meals, and none within 3/4 hours of bedtime

Some people swear by Aloe Vera juice
DGL licorice tablets
Apple Cider Vinegar with The Mother
Chewing Gum
Probiotics

Personally I have a tumbler of warm water on rising in the morning to dilute anything undesirable sloshing around in my stomach

Raise the head of the bed by 6" or so, you can buy blocks

I think my reflux is caused by a lax LES sphincter, if anyone has any help for this please share
