Re: Bile Reflux

Hi. Sorry you are having these issues.

I have been told that unlike acid reflux, bile reflux can be hard to control. I was diagnosed with bile reflux last October after an EGD (symptoms began suddenly the month before in Sept). The gastro noted a small amount of bile in my stomach along with chronic inactive gastritis. He says it is because I no longer have a gallbladder (bile refluxes back into my stomach from the duodenum). My symptoms were tightness under ribcage , burning/stinging feelings near belly button, URQ discomfort, upper back pain and burning, occ. nausea particularly at night (no vomiting), chills, and bright yellow burning acidic stool. When I sat down and leaned back my discomfort improved drastically. I am using the past-tense for my symptoms as they have improved markedly the last few weeks except for the back pain/burning when I stand too much. I also still have belching and passing of gas at the other end much more than is usual. I am taking a low-dose PPI, carafate, baclofen and welchol. I also follow a restrictive low-fat, low acid diet (similar to what is suggested for acid reflux), and sleep with the head of my bed elevated and try to sleep mostly on my left side. One thing I think has helped me is drinking a glass of goat's milk kefir twice a day. I also walk for thirty minutes twice a day as I feel it helps my overall digestion. I have lost about 30 pounds, too, which has also helped me to feel better, and I don't eat 3-4 hours before bed. Bile reflux can be debilitating so I try to get lots of rest during the day. It helps that I am retired.

I hope you get some relief soon! In my case it has taken me almost 8 months to get this somewhat under control. Please post back and let us know how you are progressing.

Wow. This seemed to have started when my gallbladder got bad and had it taken out. Interesting that you did too! My liver function labs have also gotten abnormal since the gallbladder operation though this is likely not related. What is an EDG? You mention "bright yellow burning acidic stool". I've had a lot of diarrhea lately and see fluorescent yellow runny stool in the toilet. Is that bile? I think I'm also on Carefate but will have to look up your other drugs. Unfortunately because of my elevated liver tests, which biopsy links to drug irritation, introducing anything new has to be carefully considered. I've already have changed one drug (antidepressant) and halfed another.
