Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

I don't think you're ever "cured" of GERD - you just manage it. I have been on daily Prilosec for several years. When I get bad attacks, they can last for several months - my last was from October until just 3 days ago. When I get bad attacks, I increase Prilosec to 2 a day, take Zantac 150 before each meal and follow a strict diet (no caffine, soda, onions, peppers, garlic, spices, tomato products, Motrin, Advil, aspirin). When I increase meds and stay on the strict diet, it takes about 3 or 4 weeks to feel better. Then I can gradually add back some diet no-no's in moderation and infrequently. Also, be sure to sleep with the head of your bed elevated or with a wedge pillow.
Once you feel better, I would still continue your meds, at least at a low dose. Also be sure you timing is right. For instance, Prilosec is best taken 40 minutes to 1 hour before eating, and Zantac 30-40 minutes before.

Also, I don't know why either, but seemingly innocent foods may set me off one day, but I can eat tacos or BBQ another day and be fine. I can't explain it. Good luck.
