Acid Reflux / GERD Message Board

Acid Reflux / GERD Board Index

Hello! I am a 26 year old male. I have been healthy all my life until now...

For almost 2 months now I have been having a problem with my insides (not sure which organ is giving me problems). I've gone to the doctor once, which was about two weeks ago and wasn't given much help. I think maybe it's because it was 10 minutes before the clinic closed and they were trying to get out of there. I haven't visited the doctor again because I am uninsured at the moment and I don't want to have to literally sacrifice an arm and a leg for a small doctor's visit. On the last visit, the doctor prescribed me with Bentyl, but hasn't helped much. He also told me to start taking Prilosec OTC to see if that helps any. I've been taking both of these for 2 weeks now and nothing has improved! Anyway, here are my daily symptoms:

-CONSTANT Burping! Severity: 8 or 9, almost 10 maybe
I can't stop! It's a daily thing. The burping isn't accompanied by burning or anything and it doesn't feel like acid reflux because I have had reflux before and Pepto, Maalox, or Mylanta cured it right away. I've also had heartburn due to acid reflux and I know it's not that and what I experience now is nowhere near that. They are just very dry burps, sometimes stinky and deep (the kind of burp you have to get ready for and comes out very loud) after I have something to eat. Now, I have been a smoker for almost 10 years of my life, but since I've noticed these problems I have quit my daily nicotine intake by ALOT. I only smoke maybe 2-3 cigarettes a day now, compared to my usuall 10-or-so-a-day. Yes I know I should quit completely, but it's hard to just quit cold turkey! The main reason I have cut down is because after I smoke a cigarette, the burps seem to worsen and I feel my stomach turning before it comes out and I want to burp every 10 seconds after I smoke. The burping and stomach turning is also bad after I eat certain foods like anything greasy, milk, cheese, some breads, tap water, etc.

-Shortness of Breath Severity: 3 or 4
Sometimes I have a hard time breathing. It never gets to the point where I can't breath at all or feel like I'm gasping, but sometimes I feel like I have to take bigger, longer breaths to feel like I'm breathing right.

-Small Chest Pains Severity: 4 or 5
Sometimes after burping constantly, my chest starts to hurt. It doesn't hurt to the point where I'm grabbing my chest and groaning of pain. When I apply pressure just under the Xyphoid Process (lower tip of sternum) I can feel a little bit of tenderness and pain. Also, sometimes when I am just sitting here doing nothing, I feel small pains through my upper left shoulder/chest area, but again nothing that hurts really really bad. Just small, random pains that go away after a few minutes.

-Clammy Hands and Feet Severity: 6
My hands constantly feel sweaty and when I come home from a long day at work, my socks feel wet as if I've stepped in a puddle on accident. The weird thing is that I live in Colorado and it is very cold every day right now because of winter. I have NEVER had this problem in my life! The only time my feet have been sweaty like that is when I have been running around or staying active. Not when I'm sitting in a desk practically all day at work.

-Slight Dizziness Severity: 2 or 3
Sometimes I get a small spell of dizziness. This usually is accompanied by the chest pains I described above. I have never passed out, stumbled or lost balance though. So I guess it's not that severe, but it happens. It kind of feels like my body gets hot and feels like there is pressure in my veins all over my body. Maybe high/low blood pressure, but not too sure because I don't think I've ever had a doctor tell me my blood pressure was too high or low. When I sit still I can feel my heart beating all over my body.

-Irritable. Feeling impatient sometimes
I work at a cell phone store. Sometimes when I am doing work or waiting for help from someone or something isn't going the way I want it to, I get really irritable. For instance, today I was trying to fix a phone and it wasn't cooperating so I got really mad inside and I wanted to just give up, chuck the phone at the wall or the customer and walk out of my workplace. I didn't do all that of course. I just asked for a cigarette break and went outside and calmed myself. What's weird is that it usually takes ALOT to make me mad and I've always been the most patient person. I am also a great fisherman! So I don't know why I've been feeling so impatient and irritable lately.

-Slight Depression? Severity: 3 or 4?
I have been happy all my life, at least I think I have.....Depression runs in my mom's side of the family. My mom and grandma both take the lowest dosage of medicine and they have been most of their lives. I've never felt depressed at all in my life. Although lately I have been very irritable and my motivation for some things isn't as high as it used to be. Sometimes I feel like I don't even want to get out of bed. I feel like I don't even want to do anything but sit at home and do nothing. I have to force myself and talk to myself to get myself out of bed and continue with the day sometimes.

-Feeling Bloated and/or "pressure" in my midsection Severity: 5 or 6
Sometimes I feel very bloated and it feels like my stomach is twisting and turning and I can hear and sometimes feel loud gurgling from my stomach area. For example, today I left work and my stomach was hurting and I was burping and feeling alot of the symptoms I just described. I also felt like I had to go to the bathroom (#2), except it felt like I was going to have diarrhea. I got home and plopped on the toilet only to squeeze maybe 4 or 5 very small pieces of poop and ALOT of gas came out too. After I was done pushing and realized it wasn't diarrhea, I went and took a nap and woke up feeling better.

Well, these are all the symptoms I have been experiencing for a couple months now. Maybe I should go to the doctor again, but I just want to see if anyone else has ever experienced this or anything like it. If you have advice, I'd appreciate it!
