I absoutely love accutane too. I love that my skin is finally clear after all these years. I just hate the fact that my skin (and not just on my face, but my arms and legs) are very, very dry. But I guess that's what moisturizer's for. :)
Hello Kyle.....
I'll post whenever I can. This is the 6th day. My lips is very dry and chapped. However It was already dry and chapped before I start. In Australia, it's winter. Do you guys just buy any lip balm?

For everyone on this drug, can you take zinc during this treatment. Also can you apply medication such as tea tree oil to spot treat spots.

I am following Paula Begoun instruction for accutane because she has been on it before and she is the expert in this field.

I wish you all the best of luck.

Get Lip Balm with SPF 15. You can take Zinc and put tea tree oil on while on accutane.
Side effects begin, today I pop my 8th pill and the dry lips have just begun and my skin is slowly starting to become dryer, right now it is mainly just the lips that are bad and annoying, will keep ytou posted
My skin is dry and flaky as....My lip is dry and very uncomfortable. But my skin is still oily as....Hence, my skin is oily and dry and flakes.....

Does anyone feel sunburn when on this drug? And I don't mean going into the sun. It's been raining here for 6 days straight.
Went to my DERM told me my skin is doing good and i only had two active ones which he gave me cortizone shots and he also said that my red sopts are fading. He told me im having back pain because my muscles and bones are dry. He also said, to take atleast 64 ounces of Gatorade eveyday. Im on 80mgs four times a week and 40mgs 3 times a week.
Im finally in my 3rd month.

Now to the thing I ask him and my uncle who is also a derm in another city. In the back of the accutane pamphlet is says, "there are reports some patients have had stunted growth taking Accutane for acne as directed.

Both said that kids that have many diseases not only acne take accutaNE and they have to use it for years so, those kids get there growth stunted beacuse they use accutane so long. But the people of accutane have to put that down because it can cause stunt in growth. So when i found that i was relieved.
Just took my 3rd pill a few hours ago. Each of the last three days has been a countdown to 8pm. Haven't noticed anything yet and didn't really expect to. Still oily as ever. Also breaking out just a bit around my mouth but I think that is because of stopping my antibiotics and topicals.

Is it alright to spot treat with something like Benzaclin in the first few weeks of Accutane? My derm told me not to use anything topically but I would like to get rid of the existing spots a little faster.

About the dry nose issue...
Anybody used nasal spray? Is it not recommended? I just bought some Afrin 'Extra Moisturizing' nasal spray ahead of time in case I need it.

Is there any reason why I should not smoke a little pot while on Accutane?
Well everyone

It has been over 10 days now and I'm feeling good, My face is dry but not horrible and my lips r quite chapped those are my only side effects. I Leave for a cruise today and will not be back for 2 weeks so i hope when i look at this next it is still alive and going well and if not i will resurrect it. When I'm back it will be in time for my monthly check up so great update will come from me then. Be safe everyone God bless
Hello
Started second week on accutane. Lips and surrounding area are chapped and very dry. In fact, the whole face is dry.

My neck is a mess. I must have scratch them when asleep without knowing.
There is rash/patch of dermatitis on my neck and under my chin. I am not sure whether they are from the accutane or just me. Can you put lip balm on anywhere other than your lip?

Now I started accutane for oily skin. It has calm down a little but still a little oily along with dry skin. What a combo.

I am taking 40 mg once a day.

Good luck to all of you.
Hey Disel, soulman, and everyone,

Accutane is going amazing...on my face (which is, of course, exactly what I want). :) But my arms are another story. I must be scratching them to death in my sleep because when I wake up, they're cut up everywhere. I have four patches on both arms that are scabbed up and starting to heal. I always wear tank tops so they're hard to hide and a lot of people ask me what happened. On one part of my arm, I seriously look like I've been using a needle to inject myself because I look like I've got tracks lol. The accutane has just made them so dry and flaky. And it doesn't help that I've been tanning so I can get a base before I leave for my cruise in a couple of weeks. But, what's most important to me is that my face is flawless. I can't even remember the last time I saw it looking like this. When I look in the mirror, I don't cringe at what my skin looks like anymore. I've never been happier in my life.

I hope that accutane continues to go well for all of you and you get amazing results. :)
Hello all.....

How can you guys afford to go to a cruise? Boston and others?

Does people on accutane get rash/dermatitis during treatment?

And do they go away easily? I hope they don't stay there for a long time.

I don't mind getting it on my body, but my neck.....now that's no good. Might have to wear band aid with all these redness and patches of dry skin on my neck.

I guess lip balm would be good for these dermatitis because moisturiser are too weak. I am going to get some soon.

Good luck to you all.
now when i take a shower and dry my legs thet stay dry and my arms are getting those dry pacthes as well. The good thing is im half way there. Also my lips are dry even though i use lip balm and aquaphor. I have gotten rashes but i believe they could of been avoided if I moisturize in that particular spot.

I do wonder if a lot of people on accutane get these rashes. I've always had sensitive skin but this is just ridiculous. I sometimes feel itchy all over and have to try so hard not to scratch. I actually got rid of my acryllic nails so that I wouldn't have anything to scratch with! Now as soon as I get out of the shower, I slather on body butter from Bath and Body Works and it seems to help. It's only been 2 days so I'm hoping I start to see some improvement.

And as for the cruise, I'm dirt poor but I'm in desperate need of a vacation from work. Plus, it ended up not being too expensive because we're not flying anywhere, we're leaving out of Boston. :)
I am on day 8 of accutane and the extreme oiliness is starting to die down.
I've been breaking out a little and have had one single pimple that forms a giant whitehead (i mean huge!). It will dry up and fall off over the course of a few days and then fill up and turn white again... and again... I have resisted the urge to pick at it or touch it at all hoping that it will not leave a huge mark. As far as side-effects go, I have had a headache twice but neither were that bad. Also, dry hair and lips but not too bad yet.
I work with kindergarten children and yesterday a 5 year-old kid drew a picture for me. It was a picture of me complete with big exaggerated red spots all over the face. I didn't know what to say and felt about two inches tall. I know that the she didn't know any better and certainly didn't mean anything by it but I still have never been more embarassed in my entire life.
hey guys, im only two weeks into my accutane treatment and my once unbelievablely oily skin is really dry and flaking...esp around my lips..i use some vaseline intensive care moisturizer, but its not that great and i dont know it will make me break out even more...i was wondering if anyone knew of any good moisturizers that dont make you break out even more.thanks.

I personally like Cetaphil moisture for my face and body butter from Bath and Body Works for all the other parts of me that have dried out.
hey, just wanted to say Accutane is awesome!! I started last July-Dec. So i have been off of it for 6 mo. now. For side effects, dry skin, lips and a rash on the back of my hands, some joint pain. and CLEAR SKIN.
I read on the instructions that accutane is a fat soluble. So when I took it I drank whole milk with it.
I looked sooo bad, i looked like a monster. Now I am beautiful.

oh yea and i totally changed my diet at the time, now i eat lots of fruit and veggies, drink lots of water, and take vitamins.

My skin is oily now, but its normal oily, not anything near like before to fuel those cysts. If i get a little blemish, its the size if a needlepoint. and it was prob. because i was sweating or something.

I use Mary Kay Deep Cleanser 3 , Burt's bees tomato soap /toner. Proactiv, Neurtogena clear pore mask/cleanser and queen helene mint julip mask

TAKE CARE!!

Hello
Accutane Update
Been on it for 18 days. All around mouth are dry and flakey. Even moisturiser can't get rid of them. Neck are still red. I take anti-histamines for the itch. I hope it doesn't interact with the accutane. Lower my dose from 40mg to 20mg per day to ease the side effect. My outer ear are dry and the face is a little red.

My oil has decreased. I have been showering once a day for the last 3 days because of the dryness and because my oil production has decreased. Who here shower once a day?

I am using this drug for oiliness so as far as breakouts, there are few in between. Red marks are still present from old lesion before I started. I will check out with my dermatologist regarding the neck issue in 2 weeks time and for the blood check.

GL to you all.
I am now on day 12. This is the first time in months that I have not had any really bad spots and am actually pretty comfortable going out in public. I'm nowhere near clear but it is looking better. I have been using benzaclin on the problem areas even though my derm told me not to - if it's too irritating i'll stop. This is very exciting for me as I haven't noticed any progress with any treatment for the longest time. May just be coincidence but I like to think that the accutane is working already. I am a bit surprised since for most it takes at least a few months. I usually get huuuuuge whiteheads and a few cysts here and there. Also, my oil production has died down quite noticeably. For about 3-4 days i was extremely oily - more than ever, and then it just stopped one morning. I still have the same amount of pimples that I did before but now they look more like 'regular' acne spots and not big freakish monsters. I just hope it stays that way (especially when I raise my dosage to 80 instead of 40)
As far as side-effects go... So far just extreme dryness of the lips. Eyes are also just a little dry. Only once I had a headache that lasted a few hours. Nothing too bad.
Do you guys shower once or twice a day? I know frequent showering can make the dryness worse, unless you are very diligent with your moisturiser.

I also have the neck dryness/itchyness.

Who here take 20mg per day?
Once a day (that's the way it's always been for me), but I noticed that after starting accutane, I have to put on moisturizer immediately so that I don't completely dry out.
I am quitting the accutane.

My neck is a mess......it's got patches of red and dry skin which looks very bad. Myt neck was normal B4 I start. Obviously, I am on my 25 days on accutane and the side-effects definitely outweigh the benefit. My oil has decreased so I am happy with that. However, scratches on my face and dry, flakey skin is not worth it. The area below my chin is just a mess with redness, itchiness and dermatitis bumps on area within my neck.

I am having an appointment with my dermatologist in 11 days time and this is when I will quit unless my neck improve.

Sorry about the bad news and GL to you all.
Boston, Disel, or others -

How long was it before you starting seeing clear results on Accutane? I just finished my 10th day (I skipped one day which I think was o.k. I had a bad headache and I wasn't sure if it was the Accutane, or the stress at work. I think it was work, because I haven't had one since). I am having the initial breakout, and was wondering about when I could expect this to start getting better. My derm only told me "a couple of weeks". Boston, I think you said you didn't have an initial breakout... but I'm wondering when you started noticing good results.

Oh yeah... Boston I think I read on another post that you still had your eyebrows waxed while on Accutane? How bad was it? My skin is so sensitive, but I really need an eyebrow wax! I am afraid it will really hurt...or burn the skin.

Thanks !!
Hi JJ73,

That's right, I didn't have an initial breakout but I didn't see a real big change until about the beginning of the second month. During the first month is when the blackheads in my nose and cheek areas started coming out and my face was so disgustingly oily, much worse than usual. I could see my shiny reflection in the glass around my cubicle at work and it was pretty embarassing how oily my face was. Gradually, it got better and now my face is dry and normal. I do have to moisturize in the morning and night which I've never had to do before.

As for the waxing, the first time I went back after starting accutane was interesting. I was pretty scared because I knew it was something I shouldn't be doing but I can't go without waxing. I have extremely sensitive skin, like you said you have. When I got back home, the skin between my eyelids and brows were swollen beyond belief and they were so red. I immediately put ice on them and that took the swelling down a bit. It was swollen for about 2 days but not too noticiable. Of course, I was focused on them. :) This past Thursday I got them waxed again and there was no swelling problem. The second I got home, I put some preparation H on them to counteract any swelling and it worked wonders.

Soulman,

I'm sorry to hear that you're going to be quitting accutane. I can completely understand how irritating the itchiness and redness are because I've had that problem on my arms. What's your dosage?
That's kinda weird that you would be getting that dry at the neck so early and in a low dose. Ask your Derm maybe if you like he can give you something for the rash and dryness and be on a low dose for 4 months. Good Luck to you too! Yes the common side effects are very annoying!!
I am quitting on my term. I will probably just stop it for a week or two to see what my neck does. It's been 2 days now since my last capsule. The derm appointment is in one weeks time. I should ring him to set up an earlier appointment or to tell him that I will quit for a while to see what happen.

Basically my neck went from a few red patches to now the entire neck. It's all bright red like a severe sunburn. There is no rash but it's itchy as hell. I have been scratching it in my sleep when I keep telling myself not to b4 I sleep. I wake up when I scratch it and just dissapointed in myself for doing it. But you couldn't help it because it's so itchy the entire neck, There is some patches/bumps behind my neck too. I take anti-histamine but it doesn't help much.

I took the accutane option when I have tried Minocin, Retin-A and Clindatech plus other OTC stuff like BHA, BP, TT Oil, Azelaic Acid and many others. My acne is mostly from my oil because they always clogged up my pores and sometimes infect them. I also took it also because I am turning 25 soon and getting old and lastly, because it cost me $3.80 for a month worth. It's a 4 month course for me.

PS: Do you all still breaks out during your treatment and do you all still have dry skin and dry lips. I am breaking out in clogged pores mainly I think because I only shower once a day now instead of twice because of the dryness accuatne cause.

have you tried cool touch laser treatments? i just had my first treatment and it actually felt good after I aws done. hopefully i can come away with clear skin after a few more treatments. im also taking tetracycline with some topicals that the derm. gave me. if this doesnt work ... i will go on accutane but im scared because of this consent form you have to sign ... it tells you all the side effects from accutane and some of it is pretty nerve rattling.
Hello everyone

I'm 32 years old as of last week and took accutane about 2 years ago. I did this privately in the UK and was paid for by my company health insurance. I felt this made a difference because i had very good care and my dermotologist decided to start me on a very very low does so it minimised any side effects. THe only downside was that i'd take it for longer but that was ok.

The side effects i had were mainly dry lips but not cracking or blistering. the minute the dermotologist raised the drug level by a tiny bit, the blistering started so she lowered the dose. i had no swelling or rash or anything and no one could tell i was on this drug.

i was however more sun sensitive and stayed out of the sun and wore long linen trousers and a funky sunhat!

i took the drug for about 9 months and my skin was lovely and smooth.

unfortunately it only lasted for 6 months and the acne returned. i was so disheartened. i had tried everything, i'd taken 15 years of antibiotics and different contraceptive pills and finally i'd taken this huge step and swallowed the little red accutane pills. and it came back.

i now take dianette contraceptive pills (sorry guys it's not an option for you!) and that keeps it under control. I won't do accutane again.

My lips have not recovered and i have no moisture glands in my lips and have to apply lip balm every 10 mintues or so. and that's forever!

my skin is also not as resiliant and is thinner and therefore i cut and bruise easier.

accutane works for some people and not for others. this is just my story and if anyone wants to drop me a line, please do so.....!!!

my bestest wishes to you all out there, i know what you are going through.

max
I'm back!!! This is excellent that you all have kept this thread so alive. I can't believe my first 4 weeks are now done. So as you mostly know i was in europe for 2 weeks and am now back.

For about the first week I was gone I still had breakouts occuring and blemishes appearing. But then they quickly slowed down. I got blood taken yesterday for month 2 pills, and I'm feeling pretty optimistic. In the last week I've gotten like 2-4 new pimples and that is it. It feels great and I hope for no more break outs. My main side effect is dry lips. They are bad, basically aquaphor every 10 minutes. My face is only dry in the morning. So so far so good, I haven't had time to read all ur posts but will do that asap.
God Bless
I have a few quick questions for people who have taken a full course......As I've said I mainly just have dry lips.......how long did that last for, I'm hoping not the whole course cuz thatd be bad, also my arms and hands r drying out to, how long did that last if it happened to any of you. Thank you
Hi Kyle

My lips are now permenantly dry and i have to use lip stuff every 15 mins or so. The best one to use is MAC Lip conditioner in a tube or pot. If you are able to get Neal's Yard Remedies, then their lip balm is the best!

Re: makeup, do you guys get Prescriptives? If so, then the traceless makeup is great. Its very sheer and does not clog pores and i used it throughout my treatment but then again, my medication dose was so low that there were not side effects but the lip drying.
This is my 22nd day on 40mg and I think I'm seeing some slooowww improvement.
I have not been getting many new breakouts except for a few new zits on my cheeks right in a group. That is also where the most red marks are so that area looks pretty bad. I think that scars/marks in this area take the longest to go away. I am also more susceptible to burning there.
Over the past few weeks I was getting breakouts w/ large whiteheads around my mouth and my chin but luckily those seem to be going away.
Like I said, I'm still getting new zits but they are smaller than the ones I would get before accutane.
The blackheads on and around my nose are surfacing and some of them can be rubbed off with a washcloth or fingernail or during washing.
The only part of my face that is pretty dry (besides my lips of course) is right along my nose and a little around my mouth.
Also I itch everywhere (especially my scalp) and it kinda sucks but it's tolerable.
I'm nearing the end of my first month and I have a derm appointment in 5 days for blood tests. I really really hope I don't have any problems so I can continue.

Is there anything I can put in my hair to moisturize my dry, itchy scalp? I've been using different types of conditioners and infusium 23 and that makes my hair better but does nothing for my scalp.

Aveda has a shampoo line called "Scalp Benefits" and it's really good. My brother did a course of Accutane and his scalp got really dry, but he got the shampoo and treatment called "scalp remedy" and it really helped his flaking and itching. He didn't try the conditioner, so I can't recommend that. The Scalp Remedy stuff can be sort of messy, but you get one of those hair dye bottles with the pointed tip, you can apply it just to your scalp. Less mess that way and you waste less by just applying it to the scalp. You can get an empty dye bottle at Sally Beauty Supply for under three bucks. If you don't have a Sally's check the local drugstore for one.

I just took my first pill of Accutane today, so I'm hoping that I'll have as good of results as my younger brother did. He looks awesome! I'm genuinely happy for him, but jealous at the same time. He's been off of it for nearly two years and still is gorgeous. Good luck to all of you! :)
I tried applying savlon anticeptic cream and miosturiser on the neck while on 20 mg a day. The WORSE thing is that I kept reinjuring it while asleep and wake up to red marks and patches. I don't even know I did it. It's much better now while I am 7 days off accutane. I got the derm appointment in 3 days time so we'll see what happen then. My skin is quite dry with only 25 days on 20 to 40 mg of accutane per day. And breakouts is not my problem now, it's the itchyness and rashity thing on my face and neck cause by dryness even moisturiser can't comprehend.

Avron: Regarding the oil, I supposed for those like you and me, you could take accutane for 2 months instead of 4. I know the feeling of ejaculation = more oiliness and breakout. It's frustrating. For people with moderate acne,4 months course its all thats needed.

Diesel: Those 16 yo must have severe acne to be prescribed accutane. I doubt anyone with nothing less than severe would want to take accutane at that age. It could cause something down the track that is worst than acne. However severe/cystic acne is an exception. I am glad you are doing well. How old r u btw?

PS: Is your lips permanently dry and chapped during and after the accutane course?
Im 17. About the lips question they are dry but not as much as when i was on 80 mgs. Im on 60 mgs. I will let everyone know about the post common side effects when im done with the course. I guess i got accutane because anti biotics stop working. wow but im still amaze that you can be that dry with that dose on the first month. I guess accutane is not for everyone. I hope you find your answer to this acne problem that we all suffer.

soulman,

my derm noticed the correlation between the oil production and ejaculation. he refuses to prescribe accutane now for me because he's somehow sure that this is due to puberty hormones.

I am sort of able to control my acne and that's why he also refuses to prescribe accutane for me, I am just sick of having to change my lifestyle just for the sake of this disease. anyway I will get on accutane if my acne does not clear up in a year or two.
I am all dried out. Everything is dry and flaky at the moment. This is from 25 days of accutane. Hence, I went from very oily to very dry in a matter of weeks. I haven't taken the accutane for 10 days now. I probably need to find a really good moisturiser.

And my neck is improving.
avron - To tell you the truth.....my acne is non-existent now.

I had oily skin and probably mild to mod. acne. The 25 days of accutane (at 20 to 40mg a day) has dried me out and now, I must say, the accutane has done its job. The problem now is the dry and flakey skin.

So I will probably not take it anymore since I have not taken it for 10 days and my skin is still dry. Plus I hear more bad things about it so if 25 days is all I need, then we will leave it at that.

So since the first 14 days on accutane or so, I do not have to deal with oily skin and breakouts anymore. And I use to shower twice a day because of the extreme oiliness. Now I only shower once a day and it is because I have to, since the skin is so dry. I also have a dry patch on my left side of the face, along with dryness and patches on my neck that is improving somewhat. That's the side effect. So I suppose this time, the benefit = the side effect.....unless this dryness continues. I first quit because I thought the side effects outweighs the benefits. My lips is not dry and chapped anymore so that's good.
Came back from the derm appointment.......Said to continue with the accutane if the acne flares up. I have been off it for 11 days now and my skin is still dry and flakey with irritation and patchy dry skin. Not a pretty sight. Maybe a few clogged pores due to the moisturiser. The oil production has definitely ceased in only 25 days on accutane

We will see what happen next. My first priority is the flaky dry patches of skin all around my face. I just hope these go away. Didn't even have a blood test when I saw him because he said the lipid and others was normal from the beginning. Except something is adnormal with the liver but he didn't say what and that it was nothing to worry about. ?? What could that be??

Anyway, GL to you all and take care of your skin while on this drug. It is a small capsule I know but it's mighty powerful and dangerous.
Day 40....

I think it has come......I am getting no new pimples now and the current ones are drying up quite well. Only side effect remains the dry lips and somewhat dry skin in the morning.....Ahh this is great if this continues I may finally be clear after 3 years of this hell.
God Bless
hey guys dont know if you care but i thought i would jus let you know my progress... im around day 18 i belive i know its still possible i may get the initial breaout but my skin has already begun to clear and dry out... if its already drying out does that mean i may not get the breakout?... does that usually come when your oily? or what just curious... im 14 and have been dicked around by derms and gp's trying many (useless in my case) antibiotics and also an abundance of topicals(useless as well)... i have mild to mod acne and a derm put me on accutane... rite now i only have 3-5 active pimples and the red marks have faded minimally... im really stoked about the tane... being that i have grade 10 in a month and would love to be clear by then:D...i always seem to ramble on these boards but i just thought id give my input cuz i love reading this thread using it to track my progress... thanks
Just started my 5th month on Sunday and I've noticed quite an improvement in dryness. My lips are barely peeling anymore, the inside of my nose isn't dry so I don't have to use the vaseline anymore (lol), and my arms have stopped itching. I still have slightly dry eyes when I wear my contacts but I just put a couple drops of rewetting solution in each eye and I'm good to go.
LOL Boston!!! I got a cyst on my back it hurts but its only one. Also on the side of my face i have a lil red spot at its a lil swollen but when i touch it stings so it might be a mosquito bite, i really hope its that. Oh yeah 4 month 2nd week. For some reason only my left arm where my tricep is gets dry weiRDDD!!!

Cysts on the back sound painful! I've never had to deal with that, but being that I sit at a desk all day at work, I can't imagine I'd be very comfortable. Well, I know my cyst isn't going to go away in 2 hours, but that's how long it's been since the injection and it's as big as ever. Lots of fun. 2 hours, 45 minutes til I can cover it with a bandaid.
day 21... 3 weeks down... i really do hope the derm ups my dosage next week even slightly becuase minus dry lips i have felt no side effects... and since i was skateboarding all day yesterday i have a few new ones:( im so afraid of sweating it sucks:( ... but it can only get better i hope.. or this could be the start of my initial breakout... i got a huge hummeron my nose and if it isnt gone by the time i go to the derm im gettin a cortisone injection.. those tihngs work wonders for me.. just thought id let all know on my "progresS"
hey everyone

i just popped my first accutane pill today. 40mg one day, 80mg the next.
I am 21 years old,(female) and have had moderate to severe persistent acne on my face and back for about 10 years. Like everyone else, Ive tried BC pills, antibiotics (which helped for a period of a year or 2 before not working anymore),proactive (which also helped for a few months) and every face wash and cream out there.

Im very nervous, but excited at the same time. I just spent about an hour reading every single most on here . lol

I am prepared for the dry, itchy skin..i wear contacts so i know they will probably be uncomfy, and i know that i could get severely depressed because i am prone to it. so my family is keeping a close eye on me

I am thankful to have this forum ..i will be checking in often
best wishes to everyone

Good luck with the accutane, karigirl. My eyes got pretty dry from accutane and contact lens wear. It would get dry at night, mainly. I recommend using Baush & Lomb Lubricating and Rewetting Drops if you experience any drying.

any feedback apreciated.

Day 50: Well it is my month and a half update and things were pretty crappy earlier this week but I'm hoping and believeing it is clearing up right now after the worst breakout I have gotten on accutane, hopefully it will be the last. My skin is just itchy and dry by my bad spots on my cheek but thats it for dry skin. The lips are basically the same pretty damn dry and irritating. Still no other side effects. For you contact wearers I have night and days which u wear for 30 days and haven't had any dry problems cuz they r really moist always. I also haven't thought of suicide or any depression and I doubt i ever will but ya never know. I'll give a 50 day update in 5 days and hopefully then my breakout will be totally gone

God bless
Day 43 update.... 40/80mg alternating days.
The last few weeks my cheeks have been my trouble spot. Since the first few weeks my forehead has been totally clear except for some nasty dark indented scars. My back and chest are also now completely clear except for marks. My cheeks have been a big problem up until this point but that seems to be doing much better (but they're covered with red marks). The chin is now the problem area and has been for a while. I currently have a fatty whitehead on the side of my chin that I refuse to pop. I've been getting these about once a week, always and only on the chin, and put benzaclin on them to dry 'em out faster. Oh yeah, and the red marks look pretty bad (repetitive, i know).
I currently have a rash all over my wrists/forearms/hands. It consists of red raised bumps in groups and some spread out all over in between. After a while they seem to turn into mini brownish scab-like things. When I put lotion on there it burns like hell. They also kind of itch. I was going to call my derm but then he may want to lower my dose so I think I'll just stick it out and if it's still there I'll ask him about it on the 17th when I have my next appointment. It's pretty annoying but I can deal with it. Has this happened to any of you? And if so how long did it last?
Use Nivea lotion: it says in the front for severe dry skin. It really works!
Well my turn for a little update. I'm around day 20 of accutane. I have been struggling for a couple weeks with dry lips. It is bothesome and sometimes painful but the moral is up. I havent had any new pimple really, apart from whiteheads. Even spent two days hiking and camping in the woods without washing and my skin actually looked good when i came back lol.

I'm also using topical tretinoin to help with the whiteheads and red marks. My skin is not at all irritated from it.

Tips : I found what helps with dry lips is emu oil.

Question : How do whiteaheds go away? do they just get rubbed off? turn into pimple and heal?
day 33... couple zits... one big(which is slowly drying with bp 10%).. other small and minute.. so far everything is good... only side effect is dry lips... oil wise my skin is just as oily as normal(which is bearable cuz i never really had oily skin) i was nervous cuz my skin wasnt dry but the pharmacist said dry skin is only a side effect and doesnt need to dry for zits to go away

My skin got pretty oily when I was in my first and second month. All the crap coming out, I think.
Day 49 -
looking better by the day... only two or three small zits on face, much better than the dozens i would have pre-accutane! back and chest are all clear. for a minute i was starting to doubt accutane, but no more.
the rash on my arms seems to be going away. but of course if it ain't one thing it's another... enter the new side effect - bloody nose. yesterday it just would not stop bleeding for like an hour. i was walking around work with tissue shoved up my nose. i also had only about two hours of sleep the night before and drank some cappuccino before i went so i probably looked all wired. i'm sure some of you can imagine what everyone thought i had been doing. oh well, **** 'em.
i had to have my two month derm appointment a little early because pharmacies are such a pain the *** with dispensing exactly 30 days.
all my blood tests came back normal but i was a bit disappointed that my dosage was not raised. last month he said he would raise it but now he says that i am at the dosage i should be at for my weight (about 150 lbs). i am still on 40/80 every other day. next month i will state my case for why it should be raised.

GoodGirlNow:
most likely the whiteheads will dry up and fall off before the actual pimple goes away. the longer it stays on there when it's all dry and yellow and scab-like, the better it will heal underneath. i hate those things with a passion.

WhyMe14:
my skin also got oily in the first month, specifically the 2nd and 3rd weeks. i would guess in about one to two weeks you will start to dry out.
wow, im too scared to drink any alcohol...

so its day 14 for me, skin is tight, but not really that dry. lips peeling..
im experiencing a tight crushing feeling in my chest when im in certain positions. ive never felt this before i started accutane..should ibe concerned? anyone ever felt this? i dont know if its even related.....
We're back from England and it was great. Well, 80 mg. was not the magic bullet. My daughter is in week 6 and she's very broken out. I called the doc this morning to see if they'd prescribe prednisone and they said just to wait it out. Looks like this isn't going to be easy. I was wondering if it's still possible to clear up in month 3 if you're so broken out in month 2. So far just dry lips and her nose has started bleeding some. She thinks her hair is falling out too. Next appt. in two weeks.
im noticing every strand of hair thats falling out of my hair now, not knowing whether it is the regular amount or not...im all paranoid..its like a girls nightmare to lose her hair...

and Mr. Bogangles...i hope your right. i wonder what exactly is happening. i will definetly bring it up Sept 7th , which is my month checkup.

so its my day 16, skin and lips feel tight, not really dry...have about 3 or 4 active large pimples on one side of my face...nothing other than that. will keep posted
day 60 and clear face eh? good stuff!

Bostongirl, im jealous, but happy for you..good luck with maintaining your clear skin!

as for me, im on day 21 already! i notice a slight improvement in my face...lips are dry, but not too bad..pimples get dry quickly..nose feels dry.but no nosebleeds yet..
so far so good..just went to get my blood tests done, and i will know the results Sept. 7th! wish me luck..i have faith in this pill..
ok..day 24 here..
side affects really kickin in...my eyes have been sooo dry..its a weird feeling..but i find them just as dry when i wear glasses as when i wear my contacts...
face flaking a lot...i wear makeup so the skin around my pimples is always flakey...as well as my nose and between my eyes..(no pimples there)
lips are generally always peely. nothing gross or unbearable...
also, joints seeem to be stiffer..
hair thinning as well.
but acne itself looking good
im gonna hang in there!
Day 9 here.
Side affects minimal. Lips feel alittle dryer than normal today. Face is dry when I get out of the shower and peels a bit. But my face gets still very oily 2 hours after showering dry and oily. Acne its self hasnt changed. Still many cysts around my jawline.
breaking out!!!! ahhhh the combination of dry and broken out is not cool
i know this is normal for the first month though...
Day 12 for me. Minor dry lips and my skin seems to be drying out nicely. So far im pleased with what happening.
Just a note of encouragement on your Accutane decision.
My daughter & I both did the treatment after countless battles w every antibiotic for years. With Accutane comes dry skin & chapped lips STOCK UP on lip balm! Her treatment was 5 months & mine was 3 months. I had reoccuring cyctic acne & her acne had spread to her back & shoulders. Its been 1 year for us w clear skin. She did recently have a case of perioral dermitis (acne around mouth, accutane doesn't help that, but it was easy to clear up.) undefined :) undefined
I'm so happy we did the treatment - You will be too !
wow
i got like more than 10 small pimples over my 2 cheeks and they are like not really going away. Well at least they are quite small when compared to my 3 cyst.Zzzz

but i thought accutane was supposed to help in scar healing already?
hmm 3 more days is my appointment , i'll go ask my derm if i can use vit E as well..cos i am on accutane but as well as antibiotics which is SUPPOSED to prevent BIG PIMPLE BUT IT DIDNT!!!
hey bostongirl, did u have any scar (u know those small holes leftover type), i got some on my face and i really hope it will heal , and hope no more holes will appear, i am really scared after my acne is cleared, i'll have pitted scars all over my face...well now only a few though
and also because i'm a bit lazy to use lip blam, my lips actually hurts sometimes when it's too dry, flaking, chapped ..haha..need to apply lip blam again..

I wasn't aware that accutane helped in scar healing. My derm told me that it wouldn't necessarily clear up the existing pimples I had but it would prevent the new ones from forming.

I only have one scar, on my cheek, due to the 6 cortisone injections into that spot (my last injection was August 4). Over the past few weeks, it's starting to become normal again. I went to a plastic surgeon to see what she recommended I do and she said I'd be able to get an injection that'll "plump" up that area to make it even with the rest of my cheek. Honestly, though, the scar doesn't bother me. I keep telling myself it's much better than a huge, bulging cyst.
hey all havent been on the board in awhile

just to let you know i've got about 2 weeks left in my second month of accutane and my face is clearer than its been in about 3 years. My only problems are red marks (which are slowly fading) and some complexion/pore issues. Like i have some open pores on my forehead/nose but nothing too bad, and a bit of general redness in my old problem areas. Basically no side effects either, only a BIT of dry lips.

Now i dont even think about my acne, instead of waking up every day and thinking "i wonder how bad my face is today"
That's good to hear, I just started accutane too, but I got this weird feeling that when I go in for my first blood test the doctor will say something like "Oh, I see your levels of such and such are too high, I'm going to have to take you off accutane." I really hope that doesn't happen because accutane is my last hope in getting rid of this stuff.

I don't mind having red marks, I just want the acne to stop. I got scars all over my back but I can live with those as long as these painful cysts just GO AWAY! I just took my 5th pill today and so far the only thing I really noticed is that all my acne is really starting to dry out, nothing else happening so far.
just for the record...Im on week 5 now...i just woke up with a huge breakout onm one side of my face...the rest of my face is perfectly clear besdies my scars...weird eh! it was discouraging, but only week 5, i know...not too many side effects ...my eyes are dry when i wake up...thats about the most irritating thing...

good luck to everyone
Speaking of side effects, when do they usually kick in? I'm only on my first week and I haven't noticed anything yet, but when should I start to notice anything like dry lips, eyes, etc?
Varies by the person......your best bet for lips is by 3 weeks they will be dry, after 2 mine were dry and have been ever since.......if you are lucky like me you won't get any more side effect.......90 day update will be coming up soon, the big 3 monther......all I'll say is things are looking much better, other then damn scars which on wednesday i goto the derm to talk about and renew my prescription
Day 95: The front of my face is still perfectly clear.....the sides are continuing tio get better except that I'm getting these red painful pimples, that seem to dry up before they even goto the top, not sure what they arew but weird stuff. I continue to use mederma seems to be doing fine, i can't really tell. God Bless
Im on day 41 now...im doing well. my acne has improved Id say about 50% since i started...
it burns and feels pretty dry after i wash it and at random times during the day...the rest of my body isnt too dry..
my eyes aren't bothering me much anymore either..my lips are really dry soem days..and others just a little peely
so, overall im doing well. my blackheads are diminishing as well. no oil on my face ..i guess thats why!
good luck to everyone..
Im going to my 6th month. So far a minor i mean minor break out occured a few weeks ago so that led my derm to prescribe me, one more month. Which is fine with me only side effects are dry and peeling lips. Last month very happy with the results. :)
im going to look into buying that makeup..thanks!

did any of your guys get little rough, dry patches of skin on your body? i now have them on my neck and back..

Mention this to the derm. He prescribed some prescription cream for the back of my daughter's hands and the dry patch/rash went away very quickly.
Yeah, I sure did. It was mainly where my biceps are, spreading down to my forearms. I thought that was pretty strange. I usually put calamine lotion on it because just regular moisturizers made it sting and hurt even more.
In one week I will begin month 4. The time has really flown by.
I saw my derm yesterday and he as well as two of the nurses were really surprised at how good I look. They would not stop talking about it. It was really a confidence boost as I have been a bit self-conscious of the numerous left-over red spots. But I guess when I put it into perspective and compare my face now to the way it was before, this is a huge improvement.
Currently I have no active pimples on my face, back or anywhere else and have not had any for about two weeks. I am confident it will stay this way since I haven't noticed any changes in my skin for a while. Hopefully I'll keep it on cruise control for the rest of the course... I can't wait for it to be over with.

To the person that asked about rough dry patches of skin... I had them all over my forearms and wrists. My derm said that almost everyone he treats with accutane develops this and he calls it the 'accutane rash'. I used a ton of aquaphor on mine and it helped. For me it went away within two weeks.
I've been on accutane for a little over two weeks now and I already notice something that my derm noticed last visit. I'm not getting as many cysts as I was. I haven't had one in about a week and I couldn't be happier. If this accutane just gets rid of my cysts I would be satisfied because they really hurt and leave scars all the time.

My lips are dry, but not as bad as I thought it would be... maybe I'm speaking too soon though. Besides dry lips I have had no other side effects. Night vision is fine, no headaches, No odd pains, nothing! :) I'm on 60 mg right now and next visit I will get bumped up to 80 mg. So far so good.
I should've mentioned it was the Queen Helene's mint julep mask (thanks Skimom). It's in a green and white container. It's pretty thick so a little will do the job.

Greenwood, I had the red blotchiness mainly on my cheeks and sometimes on my forehead. I used cetaphil to wash my face and then apply aloe to soothe it. It wouldn't make the redness go away completely but it toned it down a lot. I don't know if you're male or female but I used to use a little bit of physician's formula press powder and then a little bit of the concealer stick on the areas that were red just so I could hide them a bit. If your face is starting to dry out, I'd say you're definitely improving. It's always those pesky red spots that seem to take forever to heal. :) If there's any other questions, feel free to ask, I'm always on these boards when I should be working. :)
most likely it will drasmatically dry up the current pimples u have which is better then them being big and red
btw im just over 2 months through, my skin is really clear compared to what it used to be...
i really cant wait till im off it because i cant drink and my eyes and lips are so dry...also i feel like its affected my mental health... which was expected because i have anxiety and depression to begin with...

good luck to the person just starting out, i forget the name...u wont be clear in a week but youll probly start drying up in a week.

Day 120: (4 month update)

Well i just finished my last pills from the last presciption i got a month ago, only 2 more months left. Doesn't that seem incredible to all of you that have been with me in my journal since middle june. I mean wow time flys. Anyways I'm still on my 80mg for my final 2 months, but things are going great so that is fine. I did get one new pimple 2 days ago but its all dried up. I'm around 90-95% clear with my scars which aren't horrible. In the last few days my skin has been dryer then ever due to this ohio weather I'm guessing but oh well. Lips are still dry but carmex gets the job done. I think that is all for now, if not or any questions please leave them
God Bless
hey do you guys no if accutane helps to get rid of those little bumps (i think they are clogged pores-milia) underneath the skin (they are skin colored and some times turn red). Has anybody had success with getting rid of these?

Also, boston, did your dry skin and chapped lips continue even after you stopped the tane?

thanks!!
i know i update pretty often but i only have about 6 weeks left..im really happy with what its done so far. i have NO pimples right now. do u know the last time i had NO pimples? i cant remember!
CARMEX(lip balm) works well, so thanks to whoever suggested that..
by looking at me, you cant even see any dry skin on my face..i dont even moisturize often..its strange cuz i thought my whole face would be flaky..
the only problem is the acne on my body hasnt really decreased..
will this take longer?
thanks and good luck to everyone

congrats!!! i hope things look up for me too ... my skin is starting to dry up ... im on day 12. i did not have too much acne to begin with so i got maybe 2 or 3 more new ones. but 2 out of 5 cystic ones that i do have on my chin area are disappearing. which is great at the beginning. hopefully things will continue to get better. also, i drink socially just once a night maybe 2x's a month. yeah i understand that anything in excess could be bad for you. hopefully it will not have any bad side effects. thanks again for your input.
CuriousP,

My face is still a little dry so that's why I still use the moisturizer. Not dry to the point where it's flaking or peeling, just a normal amount of dryness. No chapped lips either.
I dunno if it was mental though, I'm very relaxed and have no problem with needles or losing blood, I find it pretty interesting since I'm a bio major. I felt no stress, but after this episode I might not be relaxed the next time, fearing that this would happen. So if somehow I was stressed this time, then next time my blood will just stop flowing ;) I watched them extract all the blood and was feeling great, then suddenly not. :| I'm hoping it was being dehydrated and that caused my blood pressure to be even lower than it normally is, which itself is low. But more than anything I'm hoping my blood itself is fine. I expect to have good cholesterol levels, but my mother has really bad cholesterol and that may have an impact on me.

Congratulations on being 95% clear, it must feel great. I'd be feeling so great if I was even 50% clear. I'm so excited to get on this. C'mon dry skin, chapped lips and joint pain, I don't care! ;)
how oily are the people using accutane. I have oily skin, but I mean it is not drenched in oil, it is usually worse in the heat. I just want to make sure that people with moderate amounts of oil have taken accutane and not dried up like a prune after, because I have heard horrer stories about people aging quicker after having used tane, because of how dry their skin became.

Also, I don't have acne on my body at all, it is just on my face, is accutane good for that or too harsh?

thanks so much for you help guys, this forum helps out so much!!
the one thing my daughter has not complained about is dry skin on her face. She wasn't real oily to begin with either. I haven't seen her peel at all.
Hi All,

I just happened upon this website/forum while attempting to understand the side effects I've been experiencing since I've started Accutane. I am in my early thirties and just started getting really, really bad acne around the age of 29. It's become worse and worse to the degree where I will not go out at times if it's too bad. I am almost done my 1st month of Accutane. I broke out terribly on the 3rd day and it's been pretty steady since aside from the last few days. The last few days it seems like the same amount just smaller. Much smaller and they seem to clear up within a day or two. Some of the side effects are:

Spots in front of eyes out of the blue  , very dry skin with lots of redness around the mouth, on my chin and red patches on my neck just started. I itch almost every where too. My wrists seem to hurt right in the joint area. I can't sit and put any weight on either hand or I get shooting or more so like aching pains. That comes and goes. My back is hurting a bit. My nose seems fine and I don't seem to have the black head problems that others have. I get headaches for days that are very annoying, but they usually go away. I've started getting a stomach ache off and on in the last 2 days.

All this is annoying, but not enough to stop my normal lifestyle. Can anyone confirm all of the above side effects? Oh and one last one...my hair is thinning or breaking on top. Not bad, but enough to notice. Has that happened to anyone?

I am on 20mg in the morning and 40mg at night. Tomorrow I see my derm for the first time since I've started this med. I am truly glad to see this forum. It can be a lonely road going through this with my face getting worse and having more people stare and completely not understanding what's wrong or why it's happening. I can't wait to get through this and I refuse to go off of it until it does it magic...praying that it does. Thanks for listening! Michelle
Hey Michelle, welcome to my thread, hair thinning is a side effect of accutane as i believe all of yours are. Just tell your derm you are having all of thema dn see what he/she says. I've only had dry skin so I'm not really in your boat of side effects

Thanks for the welcome Kyle! I am going to the derm today. I look forward to hearing what everyone else is experiencing. It's a bit of a rough road, but will be well worth it, if it actually clears my face.

I was wondering how many people had to do a second go around?
Hi Everyone,

I just started on Accutane about 3 1/2 weeks back and stumbled onto this forum today. It's certainly comforting to be sharing this with others who are going through the same thing.

A brief history- I'm in my mid 20's. Suddenly since last yr, my skin started to deteriorate. Then this yr things got worse. I went on doxycycline earlier this year which cleared my face up beautifully but after 2 weeks I started to get intense itching and some rashes so I stopped. My face got much worse. This happened twice. Then my face just exploded. I am not covered in acne, and I've seen worse but I have huge cysts on my forehead.

I changed dermatologists and the new one looked at me and said Accutane! I was very apprehensive about taking it at first.

It's week 3 for me now and my cysts are not as many on my forehead. Right now, just 2 active ones. However I have a million little flesh colored bumps all over the lower part of my face. This was there before accutane too but I thought by now maybe they'd start to show signs of diminishing. So far none. Anyone else have this problem and can share their experience?

Not much side effects other than skin dryness and around the mouth and lips. I've had kinda dry lips always so this isn't too hard to tackle.

My only concern is that after reading some of your posts, all of you started off with low dosages. My doc started me on alternating days of 80mg and 40mg. And I barely weigh a 100 lbs!!!
Day 125: Well I continue to be drying out immensly compared to what it has been overe the last 4 months. Even my ears are dry its weird, i did get 2 new pimples, one tiny one of my chin and one of my forehead. First ones in 2 weeks. So things are sitll going very well pimple wise. With this drying effect coming out of nowhere. I'd rather be clear and very dry though so no worries lol. Thats all for now

hey K.D,

I was just wondering how bad your acne was to begin with, was it just on your face or body too? How oily was your skin?
Hello all, Day 8 and all is well, haven't seen much change for the good or bad. I did have a lot of little bumps on my forehead, and they are completely gone. I'm beginning to dry out, especially around the nose and mouth, plus I'm getting itchy around my body. No change on my back, it continues to have many cysts on it, and those damn things are painful! I try my best to leave them alone, but if they get a white head I ususally bust em. I know, I know that's a horrible thing to do, but I can't help it. Anyway, I hope my back starts to clear up. That's the reason I went on this stuff.

I'm really sorry to hear about your problems Kari. I hope everything works out for you.
hey everyone,

i just came along this site not too long ago, anyway I was on accutane last year started the first week of november 2003, i was only on it for 4 months and my acne got so much better, but not all good things last forever, I took my last pill sometime in march and i was thrilled. the only side effects i got was chapped lips and dry skin. my skin was awesome over the entire summer. I started to break out in late september so i went to the doctor on my campus and he put me back on accutane. Im on week 5 of round 2 and my skin doenst seem to be getting better, im 22 and weight about 185lbs i take 60mg a day. My older brother was on it when he was about 17 and he hasnt had any new break outs, he is 25 now so i think there is hope yet.
hey everyone,
im on my 21st day and i broke out some during the course of accutane. my lips are extremely dry and i feel some days are better than others. hopefully it will start working soon for me because the side effects such as extreme chapped lips came really fast.
Yeah, that is strange that the doc is even doing that. Unless it's a cortizone shots which are sometimes given out for a cyst.
Well, he wasn't picking like I do lol, but he used some tweezer type objects to squeeze my black heads out.. I'm not really sure what was going on since it was on my face but it hurt like hell everytime he warned me 'pressure' and pressed reallllly hard. He said I have so many, we'd have to do it in sessions, but hopefully the accutane will take care of a lot of it.

My previous dermatologist (crazy fellow) had also told me he'd have to take some of the blackheads out manually but we never got around to it- I changed docs and am much happier now.

It's officially a month for me now (or maybe it's tomorrow?). My skin is clearing up -somewhat, but the subsiding cysts could be due to the oral cortisone I'm taking, I can't tell. No major break out since my last doc visit and hope it's all uphill from here.

Still, the million miniscule bumps I have all over my face feels awful when I touch my skin. I wish they would just dry and fall off. Some are definitely blackheads but others are skin colored tinny bumps. What ARE they?

I dont know but i have like 2 of them they do not hurt and they do not get red. So really its not a pimple. Hopefully they will go away on my last few days of accutane.
I stood outside to vote on Thursday night for an hour and a half... here's what I learned:

Cold + strong wind + accutane = ouch!!! Painful, dry, peeling skin.

My nose is sooo cracked and no amount of moisturizer, lotion, vaseline, neosporin or anything else can help stop the pain. Not to mention the fact that my skin now has a lovely dry layer over the top of it-it has sort of a whitish cast to it. I'm going to wait a few days to exfoliate it off, because I don't want to break my skin or make it even more raw. For now, I will just keep applying anything that promises moisture (but with no fragrance- it BURNS!) With winter finally here in the Southwest, I'm glad I'm nearly done with my treatment!

P.S.-I don't have any pimples, blackheads, or anything on my face anymore. I've actually forgot that I had freckles! I had them as a child, but I thought they went away when my skin began to break out. Guess I just couldn't seem them under the redness (or all the makeup I used to cover the redness up-thank God-and Accutane- I don't have to wear much anymore). They're light, but pretty cute, if I do say so myself. lol... My scars are also better, which I attribute to the fact that I'm not longer getting pimples on top of the scars. I think that without irratation, they've been able to go down in color (they're now an almost unnoticeable faint pink). Now, I only have a few indentions from old pimples... I'm looking into treatment for those.
should I wait until the summer to take accutane, becuz I was planning to start in the beginning of December and I live in Canada...I don't think I can wait though, unless it is going to make my skin worse, than i will.
I'm sure you'd be okay if you started it in Dec. Just make sure you keep your skin incredibly hydrated if you are outside for long periods of time. The wind was blowing really hard and my face is just quite a bit chapped right now. It didn't make my skin worse, like you said, but it made it hurt a little bit. The pain is subsiding (as long as I don't use products with fragrance) but now I'm dealing with little flakes on my face that are aggravating. There is a bunch around my nose and everyone keeps telling me to wipe my nose or handing me a tissue.

I'm almost done with my treatment and this is the first time I've been painfully dry (except for my lips). Trust me, a little bit (or even a lot) of pain is worth it for clear skin. Just be careful of what you use on your face, especially when it's cold, so that you don't dry it out more and if you're going to go skiing or anything this season, use a THICK moisturizer, and maybe even some vaseline around areas that are really prone to dryness, like your eyelids, corners of your mouth, and the corners of your nose. I hope everything works out for you!
I need some help with my severe dry lips. Last week the corners of my mouth started cracking, causing scabs and it looked like ugly cold sores.

Well now, it's basically very tender and pink around that region and looks like my lips are extending on either side lol.

any suggestions anyone? any special chapsticks, creams etc?

Hey Lulu's mom... I had the same problem; I called it "joker lips" from the old batman t.v. show. My derm. told me not to use any chapsticks with menthol in them. It can be drying and actually make things worse. I was using Carmex and it'd burn when I put it on (I'm glad it works for some people though). I also tried Burt's Bee's lip balm, but that also has menthol so it burned and didn't help. I got Neutrogena's Instant Lip Remedy and it works great. It's not waxy, so if you put it on the skin around your lips, it's not really shiny and noticeable. It also is very soothing. My lips have gotten considerably better since I've been using it. It's been about a month and a half. I already went through one tube and panic when I don't have it on me. You should try it. It's like $3 at any drug store. I hope it helps.
Hey guys! I just took my first dose of accutane this morning. I was wondering when my skin will start to get dry, and when the oil production will decrease? Also, I have one more question. I started a thread on it, but I didn't get too many replies. What is your skin care regimen while on accutane? I don't know what to buy. Thanks in advance! :D

Congrats on starting accutane. :) In my case, drying started within the first week to week and a half. I got really dry after that. I used cetaphil and the moisturizer and that made everything fine for me. Just be sure to stock up on lip balm, moisturizer, and eyedrops (especially if you wear contacts). Good luck. :)
I've been on 60mg a day for five days now. I'm pretty paranoid now. I like to workout and exercise a lot so my muscles get sore often, including my abdominal muscles. Of course all throughout the day I'm trying to perceive any ill effects accutane has on me, and isn't muscle soreness something to look out for? If so that would be a tough one for me to know if accutane is affecting me or not. Hopefully I'm not one of those unlucky few that get those horrible side effects. And hopefully my liver is doing alright. That would suck to be on accutane a month then be taken right off it cause of my enzymes.

On day 3 my nose became like sandpaper but it's back to normal now. In only 5 days I didn't expect to breakout or clear up any and that's basically what's happening...not much. My nostrils are very dry now, though. My lips and skin seem normal, I'm using a lot of chapstick even though they aren't dry, just in case.

I've got a question for everyone...how much water do you drink a day? I'm looking to help my liver out and also reduce drying so I am drinking 5 liters a day (used to drink 4).
I have been off of Accutane for about 20 years. I'm 50 now. Some of the oil did come back, but not very much. I took it for the full three months though. Sometimes, some people have to do another three month course if their face breaks out again later, but mine never did. It got really dry and I had to use a really good moisturizer when I was using it. Also, eye drops because my eyes got really dry. Then I had some small scars and I had a dermabrasion for them. My skin is really smooth now. The scars are barely noticeable. I give myself glycolic peels at home and it makes my skin even smoother. They are also good for acne.
I hope so... just that, before accutane, nothing was really that bad with my cheek area. now it's gotten a LOT worse.

It's nice to have a clear forehead though. I don't have to keep hiding it with my hair :D
Theres gotta be something to that because my forehead is pretty much clear ... I had one blackhead but rather than that, CLEAR. Its pretty much moved down to my cheeks and my jawline. I have about 4 small cystic ones by the jawline and my cheeks have about 4 or so pimples. Sucks because I never had them there .. !!!! I had mild to moderate at times but mainly mild. I thought that shaving was what made my acne worse but we will have to see. I have been on Accutane for about 1.5 months now. First month was on 40mg and now I alternate b/w 80mg and 40mg every other day. Hope things clear up soon. BTW, my lips are extremely chapped hahaha and I'm so self conscious now about my lips being so dry I am literally putting on lip balm seems like every hour cause I drink so much water. Do blackheads eventually disappear because I have noticed I have them when I never really had them before.
Well, I've gone through 11 days worth of pills so far. On the 8th day or so, my skin began to peel a little and my lips were suddenly extremely dry. I was kinda surprised how drastic a change it was from the previous day. And now I've broken out on my chin. This doesn't really bother me, as long as I'm clear someday. Of course if I don't clear up after 5 months...then I don't know what I'll do. Typically how long does it take people to see improvement from when they began? I had a slight improvement before that outbreak, but I don't really count that. And after I lifted weights for the first time on accutane, my muscles were sore for so much longer than usual. I'm not really having that trouble now though.
Hello all, been awhile since I posted, been out of town. Well, its been almost exactly one month since I started Accutane, so let me bring you up do date. Side effects are mild, dry skin (which is controllable with Cetaphil lotion), lips chapped as a mofo (been using several different lip balms), and that's about it, very mild breakouts but nothing serious. For chapped lips I have found a very good treatment Neosporin Lip Therapy, this stuff is great. I usually use it at night, and during the day use Carmex, Vasoline Lip Therapy, or Blistex Complete Moisture. I go to the derm for my first check up Thursday, so I'll give an update after that. Hope everyone is getting along well.

Turbo,

I'm extremely self conscious about my lips too. the sides of my mouth are soo flaky its awful and I've been drinking tons and tons of water too.

I started straight off on 40 mg and 80 mg on alternate days. I'm still on that. I was concerned that it was too high of a dose for me though since I weigh only about a 100 lbs.

My forehead WAS clear for a few days but now I have a bump starting- but nothing half as big and awful as they were before. Just a small red bump (started last night) and it hasn't turned cystic yet. It may have something to do with the hat I was wearing all day and night. My blackheads on my forehead are fewer but still there. They seem to be coming out on the surface though so hopefully gradually they will just go away themselves.

My derm. said a lot of it should clear by itself but a lot of them (coz I have soo many) will have to be extracted manually so he'll do it bit by bit every month when I go for my check up.

I'm 1 3/4 months through my treatment now. I have my 2nd derm. visit next Monday. Hope everything is in order.
Hello all,
I was reading a lot of your posts and figured you might want to hear from someone that took Accutane 6 years ago. My skin was always bad, and by the time I was 24, I had had enough, I had terrible cysts all over my face. I was miserable and the mental stress from it was unbearable.
Well, like many of you the worst side effect I had was the chapped lips. It was terrible, but it goes away when you finish your treatment. I had the dry nose thing too, but other than that, my side effects weren't that bad.

For several years after finishing the treatment, my skin was perfect, it was clear and I never had any problems. My skin is usually clear now, but for the last 2-3 years, I will get an occasional pimple, usually once a month(I'm a female) or when I'm really stressed. Sometimes they are small, and sometimes they are larger, like cysts. But I only get like 1 or 2, and even then, I think back to how bad my skin was, and having 1 or 2 isn't so terrible anymore.
I hope this info answers some of the questions about how long the clear skin will last. If you have any more questions please let me know. :)

I love it when people come back here with good news. Thank you for that. My daughter is on week 18 and not quite clear totally. She's got like 2 on her face I think. I was wondering if you have a dosaging opinion as to what keeps it away the best. Long term low dose or short term higher dose. Or is it total dosage? OR - does it just depend on the individual and how well they react? Cause, unfortunatley, some folks break out again within months. I'm so hoping that's not the case for my daughter and all the good folks on the accutane journal thread! I'm so paranoid about it.
Day 150: 5 MONTH UPDATE!
Well so I've finally come to the last month of my accutane course and journal, and I couldn';t be any more pleased with the results. I am now 98% clear with still like one or 2 blemishs on my toublesome jaw reagion. My front of my face hasn't seen a pimple in around 2 months and the jawline is basically clear. I stopped taking mederma just to let my skin be alone. I go back December 16th for the last time and they said they would put me on retin a and other crap to help my skin heal. I have pretty major scarring on the jawlines but its so nice and smooth now, no indent scars which is very lucky. I'll pop my last pill on Christmas eve and what a perfect ending to my 6 month journey. In recent posts I said my skin was drier then usual, that only last around 2-3 weeks and my dryness is back to normal. Only side effects still include the dry lips. My blood tests were perfect as usual and I'm just very happy about my skin now.
Hey everyone.
Yo Kyle, thank you so much for staring this journal. I just found it today and its awesome that it is recent.
Alright. My history.
I am 17 years old, a senior in High School, and friggin sick and tired of acne. It COMPLETELY changed my personality (for the worse.). I used to be outgoing, and was actually voted funniest by my class in grade school. This all changed the middle of Freshman year. I started getting them on my chin, and it worked its way up. Now, it is probably at its worse. I can't even look people in the eye when I talk to them, and I fear comments from my younger cousins or friends. I just want my life back. My acne is moderately severe (if there is such a thing.) and mostly on my face. It actually pretty much covers my face.
OK, I started Accutane last tuesday and took my eighth pill today. I am feeling some of the common side effects, but they are nothing compared to the pain caused by acne internally. I have slightly chapped lips (kinda started 2 peel today), minor back pain when I strain while lifting weights or lay down, and my skin is pretty dry, esp. in the morning. That is pretty much it and if it gets worse BRING IT ON!
Thanks again Kyle and all you guys who write in this board.
Yo guys wassup.
I am on my 13th day i think. I havent really seen a big initial breakout. This is probably because I have been breaking out steadily in the past few months. My Mom told me that she thinks it looks better, but that mite be to be nice, since thats what moms do. Even though I know it won't happen, I would love for an improvement, ANY improvement, because I have to do a speech in front of my whole English class on Tuesday. Three damn minutes in front of the class with my crappy face! At the very least I would like no further breakouts to occur.
Anyways, I was sitting around just fantasizing about what it would be like to have a clear face again. Life would be amazing. No more picking out strategic locations to sit in at the dinner table, classroom, etc. so people couldn't see my face as good. No more worrying about my younger bro's friends or cousins asking me what happened to my face. Wow, that would be great. Suddenly these chapped lips, dry skin, achy backs and such seem very much worth it. I was just wondering if somebody could give me an explanation of what life is like with clear skin.

Mike
Hi - I am new to this thread. I used Accutane about 13 years ago when I was 20. I am now 35 and had my mild acne gone severe from using Zenmed within a span of 3 months. So, stay clear from all those herbal remedies - it may work for some but GO SEE THE DERM NO MATTER WHAT. I learnt the hard way. I was trying to avoid taking antibiotics.

I honestly cannot remember any bad side effects when I used Accutane then - just dry lips and dry nose. That's about it. And also, I had 3 lovely kids in the past 7 years - so, definately nothing of the horror stories you hear about affecting your kids and all. Question to some of the older people who are using Accutane (and maybe used it when they were younger) - was Accutane harder to bear at an older age?

I am scheduled to see the derm tomorrow and don't really want to mess around using the milder stuff. We will see how it goes. Just frustrated that I wasted 3 months on some product that actually made my acne worst - it was supposed to be a more natural approach than Accutane - utter crap. Paying for it now.

I'm 27, and I haven't had any trouble with Accutane. Along with some of our younger fellow posters the only effects I've noticed are chapped lips, dry skin, and some lower back pain (usually after driving for long periods).
Hi everyone,

Congrats, Kyle, on soon being done with accutane. :) I've been off for 3 months today and am happy to say I have been doing really well. The only troublesome spot on my face is my neverending cyst which I'm finally getting something done about it tomorrow. I cannot wait.

I did notice that my scalp has become very, very dry, though, and is itching a lot. Not sure if this is due to accutane because I had this problem before. I just can't remember if it was this annoying before. Anyway, good luck to all of you who are finishing up accutane (or just starting). :)
Well I've been on accutane for about 4 weeks now, and saw my derm for my first checkup today. Total cholesterol is up to 150 from 120, which he says is still good for now, triglycerides are up from I think 70 to 100. However, my enzyme levels are up to 120/70. He said if they go up again and approach 200 then he'll have no choice but to take me off of accutane. Somehow I think that's what's going to happen and accutane will just be another wasted attempt on ridding myself of this curse :\ Oh well. Right now I'm incredibly dry, which doesn't bother me, but is one of the reasons he's keeping my intake at 60mg instead of 80mg (I'm 188 lbs so 80mg is what I should be taking). I hope more than anything that my enzyme levels stay about where they are next month. Anyone else have any liver enzyme experiences? Does the fact they went up indicate that they'll probably keep going up?
So did all of you guys get blood tested prior to being proscribed accutane? Or was it just the first month? Im not worried about it I guess, and i know that they have to do it by law. Also, I am just starting accutane, im pretty sure that this is day 3 lol, so ive got a long ways to go, I dont have really bad acne, just moderate and persistant, no big cysts thank god, just underground ones that hurt like mothers lol...when can i expect to have an initial breakout, if any, and also when did all your side effects start setting in. *also: I just got off retin A micro so my skin is already pretty dry*

I didn't get a blood test before starting either. It did concern me a bit I suppose - after reading everyone else's posts here, but turns out everything was ok. I've been for 2 bloodworks since then and everything is normal.

I also didn't sign any papers but was asked repeatedly if I have any plans on getting pregnant anytime soon.
Hey guys

I'm on my 16th day of the accutane. My acne started slightly recessing, then I went back 2 my usual breakouts. This sucked cause I had 2 give a speech in front of my class 2day. O well. I can tell from these posts that the accutane course is like a rollercoaster. People have good days and crappy ones. I'm glad 2 know this beforehand so my hopes dont get too high. I have the usual: chapped lips, dry skin, kind of achy back, and thats about it.

I was wondering; Me and my friends play tackle football (without pads) a lot and I was wondering if any of you guys know if this is especially dangerous during accutane. For example, does accutane make me more susceptible to broken bones and stuff? and does it stunt my growth if I do break a bone?

Thanks guys.

Mike
Man I have that a lot ... its caused by your skin being dried out. Moisturize when it does that. I am on month 3 taking in 80mg a day now. She bumped it up after looking at my blood results. She said my face is looking very well. I took Accutane about 8 years ago when I started to break out and had to stop after month number 2 because my blood results came back bad. I was on generic accutane but now I am getting the brand named ones. Hopefully it works better and my body is taking it in better also. It is pricey even with insurance ... its like 300 a month. Oh well price you pay for clear skin.
wow, 300 that really surprises me!!! maybe its just cause i am on the generic amnesteem. Mine is only 10dollars a month, which comes out to 50 obviously after my full course. This is less thatn the cost for doxycycline for one month. At least with my insurance carrier. BTW, when can I expect to see dryness, i am on day 4 and my eye are really dry, nothing else is tho
I thought I would be clear from the initial breakout. I was wrong hahaha. It was not that bad but my cheeks broke out and its month 3 now and finally starting to reside. I started 80mg per day now so hopefully things work out. You guys that just started it will start getting extremely dry chapped skin and lips. I suggest heavy moisturizing with real lotion not jergens. Get Nivea or Eucerin. Those are pretty good for body lotion, well at least it works for me. Good luck guys!
I'm poppin my 21st pill today (I take 40mg a day so that means it's day 21). That is pretty weird though. Time does fly. I'm on my last packet of 10 pills so I'm probly gettin my blood tested on Wednesday. I hate blood test but it will b worth it in the end (i hope). Well there is some improvement on my cheeks and forehead, but I still got a bunch about an inch to the right and left of my nose, and a lot of blackheads on my nose. These don't bothr me as much but I was just curious, how long till they go away??
Side effects not too bad. Not depressed at all, still have a passion for things I had before, lips are more chapped and cracking and peeling, which is annoying, but I can handle it. dry skin in the morning and after showers, very slight backaches, and thats it.
My regimen is real simple: Wash with hot/warm water at night, and cold water in the morning (this helped me reduce some dryness for some reason) I don't use moisturizer cause it makes me feel like i'm gonna break out when I do, but I do use it when I'm verry dry.
funny to think, back in june i realized i wasn't gonna be clear for the summer, was just hoping for christmas and accutane made it happen
thats better than any other gift i could imagine. happy for you kyledale!

as for my progression ... im about 4 days into my 3rd month and my eyes are finally starting to dry up. the cool thing is my acne is dying rapidly! i used to use clearasil to cover up some of the redness ... but not i just use moisturizer and im ready to go. i dont even use a cleanser anymore ... just dove sensitive soap. its been working to a charm. i am currently taking in 80mg per day ... i dont really care about dry skin or whatnot ... i just really want my acne to be GONE!
Coming up on the completion of month 2, my next derm appt. is the 21st. So far so good, chapped lips, dry skin, that's about it. Face is completely clear (just an occasional lone pimple), and back is clearing. Again, Neosporin Lip Treatment works great! I use it at night (when I remember) and usually after a night or two of using it I don't even have to put anything on my lips during the day. However, if I forget and skip a night they dry out again very quickly.

wow clear after month 2? you must be one of the lucky ones or just had moderate acne! good luck to yoU!
Im day 10. Too early to see improvements, I am getting some new ones, so i may be doing the initial breakout thing, but then again maybe not, who really knows. Right now all i have is dry sinus area, sore back, and some headaches. anyone know if smoking weed is bad while on tane?
Aite its 4 days until the end of month one for me. I'm still pretty surprised how fast these days went. I will probly see the derm in a day or 2 since i got my blood test done a few days ago.
It was kinda weird yesterday. I got into the habit of rubbing my nose lately cause it felt kinda sandpaperish. well, i doin the same thing yesterday, and they seemed like they just kiinda rubbed off. So now there arent even close to as many as there was before. i guess thats cool. The thing that scares me is that my skin isnt dry like it was before. Did this happen to ne1 else?? Im just nervous that my skin is getting immune 2 it or something.
One thing that sux is i got asked to som formal dance that i dont wana go 2 at all. Just the thought of getting my picture taken kills me. I did get an awesom suit so thats cool, but its nuthin with acne. Oh well, come prom time i hope to be clear and then I'll get my sweet revenge. haha.
Well i hope i get my dosage raised, but will i break out initially if i do??
dont wanna look crappier than i haf to at this dance, which is next saturday.

Thanks
Mike
mikeryanrebecca, about the drying going away, this happened to me numerous times in my 6 months, sometimes i'd be very little dry for a few weeks then extremly dry, just part of the side effects, they don't stay constant
Hi all, i was put on accutane because of my face and back. My back is more severe. At night mostly and times throught the day, my back really starts to itch. I don't know if this is just because the skin is dry or if maybe it could be something else besides acne. Anyone..please..help!
I jsut wanted to post saying that I am just starting my last month of accutane. I am SO pleased with the results. While i must admit im scared about going off of it, i cannot stress enough how worth it it was. My side effects have been very minimal, basically just dry lips, and it has just made my confidence skyrocket. My skin is completely clear, i only wear makeup now when im going out at night to parties and what not, and my boyfriend whom I started dating during month 3 asked why I was going to the dermatologist one day because I had perfect skin (this was before he knew i was on accutane). Anyway I just want to let people know how happy I am, and if you are considereing accutane really look into it first, but don't rule it out because it can do wonders!

I take it you didn't get a bad initial breakout so no red marks? My daughter is pretty clear starting month 6 also but she's got a ton of red marks from the initial breakout. I'm glad you are doing so well. Going without her makeup is not an option at the moment unfortunatley.
Day 180--6 Month Update!!

Well after my long journey it has all come to an end. 6 months ago, I started this journal to first off support myself through the what can be a hard period and to help other people who are nervous or just curious. All in all Accutane has given me a new life with new confidence to boost. I just got back from my final visit with my Derm and her and I couldn't be happier. My skin is now for the first time in about 4 years virtually 100% acne free. Due to the light scarring I have on my trouble some jaw line, I was prescribed azelex, which is known for exfoliating the skin and helps reduce the scarring. I can't wait to see how well it works. Throughout my course the main only side effect was dry skin and dry lips. At times very dry and at times not dry but I did not experience any other of the hundreds of possible side effects. If any of you remember my original case of acne, I did only have mild to moderate acne but knew it was accutane I needed. So I highly recommend this drug to anyone that truely feels they need this drug when nothing else has worked. Now don't think for one second now that I don't have acne that I'm leaving all of you. Like Diesel I will constantly post on this board and give my advice and experience when needed. I would also like to continue to give my "post accutane" updates in this thread of mine which has become the place to be. I'm asking the wonderful mods here to keep this open even though my course is done because so many others communicate in this thread and help one eachother. This thread is a wonderful example of how many great people there are in this world. Thank you all

God Bless
hi, this forum has been so good at giving me great info and nice tips.
I just took my 6th pill and already my face is getting really dry and my lips are crackin a bit,(it doesnt help i live in michigan and its been a cold one so far). i hope everyone has been clearing up. i think i have read every post in this thing.
worst side effect i had was extremely dry lips where they would bleed, after 6 months that was it

mike don't get disscouraged, i was breaking out for 3 months before it all changed
side effects: Extremely dry skin, peeling and extreme drying of my lips, several nose bleeds, initial breakout where I never had it before, dry eyes.
Mike- I know how you feel! I'm almost to day 40 and i really haven't experienced any results at all. The inside of my nose is PAINFULLY dry even though i've been using a q-tip to put ointment up there and sleeping with a humidifier. My eyes are also painfully dry which has forced me to resort to wearing my glasses instead of contacts. I've always thought i haven't looked my best with my glasses..so no i have acne and i have to wear my glasses. I had a derm appointment the other day and i was hoping she'd raise my dosage (i'm on 50mg) but she didn't. She said to just keep up with what i'm doing and she's sure it will work. Keep your head up Mike! It's hard to be patient i know..but we can do it!
keep your head up guys things will get better. more you think about your face the more, to me, it gets worse. i know its hard as a fellow acne sufferer but trust me, it will get better. This is month 3 for me and its ending pretty soon (1 more week) and I just came back from Vegas. Needless to say, the dry air in Vegas and all the pollution (smoke, cigars) made my nose bleed considerably. The cold air in Texas does not help either. What I have noticed is that when I stress less ... working out and not worrying about my face ... drinking a lot ... a lot of water with fresh veggies and fruits ... my face gets better. sorry for the long run on sentence. i have had the best face in a long time even though i just broke out with 3 new pimples ... they are going away again. i think it was just traces from vegas, due to a bad diet and poor sleeping regiments. all in all ... through all the joint pains and nose bleeds, accutane has cleared me up cosiderably. I still have 2 full months to go and I hope it starts kicking into overdrive soon. dont lose hope guys ... it will get better. i am on 80mg per day and am about 80% clear. hopefully things keep getting better for us all because I do feel like an old man with my forever lasting knee pains from accutane.
so you get regular pimples now? i'm completely freaked out by what has happened on my face in the past couple of weeks. esp since my reaction seems to be somewhat unusual.

i tellya, i'd be so happy just to have my regular old acne back! this is torture. so hard, some days, to keep the faith. and so stressful, going to the doc so often, and the blood work and all.

i must say, having an outlet like this really helps, bless you all for being here and being so supportive. it's like silk'n'shine on my dry, chapped psyche!
I have been reading almost this whole journal from the beginning today because I'm considering letting my 16-year-old son go on Accutane (Dr. recommended it), but I'm really worried about the side effects. He does not have cystic acne (I have that, but control it with spironolactin), but has regular pimples heavily all over his face, back, shoulders and chest and has for a couple of years. We have tried several antibiotics, ProActive, topicals, etc. I have read all the side effects you have all gotten with the dry lips and skin and joint pain. Can any of you tell me if you are VERY active athletes? He plays football, basketball and baseball with no down time in between. Summer is even busier with weightlifting, 7v7 football, baseball and basketball all at the same time. I am concerned about this joint pain/back pain, the hair loss since he's a guy, plus all this dryness/burning with the amount of sweating he does. How much do this side effects change your daily life?

I thought we could just deal with this until he grows out of it, but I see from the postings that lots of people are in their 20's and still dealing with acne.

There is also another side effect I'm worried about. My son gets migraines 3-6 times a year for the last couple of years. They are brought on by physical activity. Does anyone have a history of migraines and gone on Accutane?
I'm on my second day today. I'm taking 40 mills a day, twice as much as my cousin who has WAY worse acne started with and we're the same age and weight. Anywho, I've had acne for about 4 years and this is my last option, I hope it works. Believe it or not, my lips are starting to dry out. My skin is VERY sensitive. A lot of face wash products would dry my skin out and swimming in chlorine pools made me itch like crazy. We now have a saline pool and it is nice. Anyway, I've heard about back pain, what kind of pain is it, like sharp, dull, achey, sore, and where? Thanks guys.
By the way, I'm using a very mild soap on the rest of my body now because before I started, what I used kind of made me dry and itchy so I'm being careful. What do you all do to your faces when you take a shower? Do you wash it at all? Use regular soap? Face wash still?
I'm on day 5 and I'm starting to notice the drying effects. I have very sensitive skin which was already kind of dry so now I'm itching even more. I'm using lotion on my body and lots of moisturizer on my face. That seems to help. All this aside from the given dry lips that I was expecting...
Hey everyone ...

Don't worry so much. I was in the same boat as you guys ... it would disappear but then the next week it would come back again. It made me not wanting to go work out, go hang out with friends, or anything besides to stay home.

It all goes away with time. I am on month 4 of accutane at 80mg per day. I still get an occasional pimple but just probably one. I am dealing with red marks for now but hopefully when I get off of accutane, some sun (natural vitamin d) and some cream from the dermatologist will help accelerate the healing.

The only thing that bothers me is the red marks left by the initial breakout and the dry skin (lips, skin on arms mainly, and hands) I always get these red rash looking spots and I moisturize and drink A LOT so this kind of sucks. I have one more month to go so hopefully things accelerate a lot faster.
Quick question everyone .... can someone critique me???

I wash with dove soap (pink bar) and moisturize with oil of olay frag. free total effects. Sometimes on a pimple that might come about I put Proactiv clay mask on that spot only. As far as vitamins, I was considering going back on them again but wanted to know if I should just wait it out till I finish my accutane prescription?

I wanted to take Vitamins E/C, biotin, b-5, b-complex, zinc, magnesium, chromium, and a multi.

Suggestions?
I would wait until you are done your accutane prescription... how far along are you with it? I've read alot of the time it takes the whole treatment for it to work... so it might not be working now but give it time and it might. I tried the whole vitamins thing and I really don't think it does dittley squat... I also used the Proactiv clay mask for spots only and didn't really find that helped either... I suggest for spot treatment using something called Dry-Lo I just started using it and its been giving me amazing results! Good luck!

Hey Michelle,
Where do you get Dry-Lo at? I am finishing up the 4th month. I have been going on 80mg for the last two months and it seems like its doing its job. I have literally 2 pimples on my face ... the rest is discoloration from the initial breakout .. not bad but you can see it. I am really hoping that this next month will do wonders.

I'm not Michelle but I searched for it on google and it's a product from Serious Skin Care. You probably have to order it.
My skin has been EXTREMELY dry over the past few days. I have had to moisturize about three times a day, and it still gets dry and flaky within a half hour after I moisturize it. I hope it calms down some soon because I am going on some retreat thing with other seniors at my school in a couple weeks for 4 days, and Im a really forgetful person, and if I forget mouisturizer and my skin is still like this, Im gonna look crazy. Its real flaky. I also have little rashes on my hands, and lately Ive been spittin blood in the morning. (I think thats the nose bleed side effect starting up). ALot of this mite have to do with the fact that i was real sick last week, so i'm not too worried. I am still very happy with the accutane. I definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Well i guess this board is dying. haha thats cool, I'll keep posting neway. My friend told me today that 'it looks like that medicine ur using is working'. It sounds like a really little thing to say for someone who has never had acne, but for me and others with acne, it is huge. My face is still verry dry. Besides that, Im fine.
Bad news ...
My blood test came back high for my AST and ALT liver levels. They were wayyyyy high ... AST was 86 and ALT was 184. Keep in mind it was supposed to be about 1-40. I don't know whats going on but last month was at 31 for both. My cholesterol level was kinda high too. I am going to cut down on meats and pasta for a week and try to take in more fruits and veggy's. I am on my last month and have a few pimples left. I was hoping to finish this up so I could go to Miami beach in the spring ... but it does not look good now. Wish me luck guys.

Oh yea ... she gave me some samples of this cream called Pandel for my excessively dry skin which turned into rash looking patches on my arms. It has been about 2 hours and the swelling has already gone down. If anyone have the same issue, I hope this helps.

Also, for those who are off Accutane, what kind of face routine do you have? I have asked several times but can't find the post. Should I just stick to dove soap and oil of olay moisturizer? Thanks for any help!
hey guys.
I am verry pleased with how this has worked. I am shocked that I am almost at month 5. This has gone so unbelievably fast. My face is looking very good pimple-wise. I havent had a pimple reach the surface in weeks. The redmarks are still visible, but they seem to be fading. One problem that I have been encountering lately has been extreme dryness of my skin, especially my face. I actually have to mouisterize 2 times in the morning before I go to school and even then its dry and flaky again by 930am. I am probly mousturizing about 5-6 times a day. I just cant believe that there is only about a month left in my treatment. I am recovering from the mental effects caused by acne, and I believe that the future is looking bright. I just hope to god that my acne doesnt come back when I am done the treatment. But I have high hopes. Good luck to you all!
