Here in the US, most people with RA are now put on Methotrexate and possibly Plaquenil as starter drugs for Ra. If the RA is bad enough, they are quickly started on the new "biologic" drugs like Enbrel. These are shots you do once a week or less or some are given by intravenous. Very strong and can almost stop RA and it's pain.

But all of them are very hard on your liver and that is why they need you to stop drinking. I know it hurts but once the alcohol is out of your system, they can give you some very real relief and stop the prednisone. Prednisone, if taken over a long period of time, can make you sicker so it's good to get off that too.

Just start by cutting back a little at a time and ask about taking more pred while you stop drinking. Then once the alcohol is gone, you can start to decrease the pred while they get you started on something else. The new drugs do work.
