It's normal to be very stiff after surgery and after 6 weeks of immobilization. I would hold off doing too much until you see your therapist next week. Until then, you can work on increasing range of motion in your wrist by gently moving your hand toward you and away from you. You can also work on side-to-side motion of the hand. ... Well nearly six weeks in and am doing great! The cast came off last week and I was surprised to see just how much bruising and swelling there was. Removal of the k-wire was very unpleasant! I am now wearing a brace with thumb support, and my hand is still swollen but I can see the barest hint of knuckle so wont be long till the swelling subsides.

K-wire is usually used for younger patients.
You will be in pain at least for the first week. You will need to rest your hand during the second week ( & the 3rd & 4th)

... I'm scheduled for a trapeziectomy on 1/7. Nothing with ligaments, just removal of the bone and a k-wire in for a few weeks til the joint fills in with blood clot/scar tissue. What can I expect in regards to my ability to return to a desk job that requires a lot of computer work/typing?
