... Hi Mysteria....I spent about 7 years on Plaquenil and 5 years on MTX and just recently went off both as I see just how well another drug works. ... The MTX dose for autoimmune disease is about 1/1000 the dose they use in cancer patients. MTX also has a long clinical history, which makes it a trustworthy drug, they'll be no "surprise" side effects. All immunosuppressant medications increase your risk of infection. Still, MTX does have side effects - doesn't mean you personally have any of them, a few lucky... (4 replies)

... It looks like these messages are over a month old, but I'll add this just the same. I was diagnosed with RA in 1989. My doctor started me on Methotrexate, Prednisone, Plaquenil, iron 3 times a day and originally tylenol 3 was part of the RX, over the years and with different doctors. the tylenol was first to go about 12 years ago. and iron was replaced with folic acid. I... (36 replies)

... I take both Plaquenil (200 mg x 3 p/day) and MTX (17.5 mg). I've been on both drugs together for almost a year. They have yet to completely control my RA (although each increase in the MTX helps) and about every 2 months, I wind up getting an 80 mg shot of depomedrol to kick a seemingly neverending flare into submission. I started Remicade and it works but my insurance... (4 replies)
... Hello, I take Plaquenil but I found that I had to take it with Prednisone for the first 2 months until it started to work. ... (4 replies)
... I am having severe RA again in my feet and ankles. Happens about at the end of every month now. Even since I've started the meds. I am on Plaquenil right now, but I am wondering how well it works since my pain has come back. I have heard some people switch over to Methotrxate if the Plaquenil doesn't work. ... (4 replies)

... Hi Kerlin, How long were you on methotrexate? I've only been on it for 1 month and the only side effects that I've encountered so far is slight dizziness and minor lip sore that goes away after a day after the medication. I take milk thistle once a day. Supposedly it prevents or helps regenerate a damage liver from different pills that one might take. I also take folic... (36 replies)
... My experience with Methotrexate was bad. I took it once a week and followed the doctor's instructions. I now need a liver transplant. ... (36 replies)
... Missy, Try talking to your doctor hon - see if he can take you off one of those meds, or at least lower your dosages - and see if that helps at all. Are you taking folic acid (for the meth side effects) and multi vitamins? do you eat something like crackers or drink milk when taking the meds? I was tired ALL of the time before starting methotrexate - it was a side... (36 replies)

... Plaquenil vs Methotrexate....Be sure to know the potential side affects and what monitoring needs to take place. I thought I was told that with Plaquenil you need to monitor your eyes more carefully.... With both drugs you would need regular blood tests to monitor various blood counts as well as liver function. ... (36 replies)

... Hi there - and welcome :) I was going to reply to your post on the Methotrexate subject - but saw that you had started a new thread - so I'll answer here. The methotrexate made me nauseous (sp?) only the first time I took it. The label says to take it two hours before a meal - on an empty stomach. When I told my DR about the nausea/stomach ache - he told me to try... (36 replies)
