Re: L-5 fusion
Mar 7, 2004
Texjoann,
You might want to look into one of the Artificial Disk Replacement trials that are going on around the country. There are 4 devices currently under investigation: Maverick, Charite III, Prodisc, and Flexicore. The benefit with these is that it conserves motion, so the 3-6 months of no movement that is part of the fusion recovery process doesn't apply. If you fit the criteria, it may be good for you with your strong desire to stay active. Doing a web seach will bring up information. I'm doing the Flexicore on 3/25. If you already have decided that you'll be getting fusion, then participating in a randomized trial shouldn't be an issue. Several of these trials may be toward their end (meaning the FDA has enough subjects - now they want to wait 2 years to see what happens), and participation may not be available. I don't know how this works with a military hospital either. People who have had their insurance pay for it were able to argue to cost benefit of ADR. Good Luck.
