Fusion question
Jan 2, 2010
... Without making this too long....I am 30 years old, have had 3 back surgeries (I am fused at the L5-S1). I have been in constant pain for 10 years and even after my last surgery (in 2004) I am unable to stand or do any activity for more than 15 minutes without terrible pain. I am interested in a doctor in my area that does a new back surgery involving some type of spring... (1 replies)
... I have had the procedure on my L4/L5 disc. I was impressed at hoe minimally invasive it was. I was able to walk out of the hospital the same day with nothing more than the equivalent of a band-aid over the incision. It unfortunately didn't help in my situation as I have degenerative disc disease. Currently both my L5/S1 and L4/L5 have annular tears, and I have several... (1 replies)
... There is problem in my back.....L4-L5 & L5-S1intervertebral discs show diffuse bulge causing thecal sac indentation n bilateral exit neural forminal narrowing. (1 replies)

... Alison, So sorry your first fusion failed, but where have you seen that most BMP fail? I've had 8 spine surgeries, four were fusions. The first one was prior to BMP, the next was 2 days after FDA approved BMP, and it was three levels as after my hardware was removed at 17 months, I was in a wreck that broke my fused back. Very successful, must faster healing and easier... (6 replies)
... I have had a microdistectomy/laminectomy and 2 fusion attemps (second one is a success!!). I can tell you that the mico/lami just "shaves" off the bulging disc and some bone. A fusion will actually take out the whole disc. (at least that is what they did on mine). Just a word of caution to you if you do have a fusion.....I used BMP instead of my own bone. Please use your... (6 replies)
I'm so miserable

... I need to vent. I just cant take it anymore! Just to update any of you who have not heard my story before, I had a bad fall in aroebics class in Jan. of 2004. Since then I have had a microdistectomy, physical therepy, coritzone shots, and the electronic stimulator all with no results in pain reduction. They tell it's an iritated nerve and it burns in my butt and down my... (9 replies)
... Hello All, I just want to ask your opinion on something. I am due to have surgery on the 17 (my 3rd back surgery) and last night I fell down my stairs. I don't think I hurt anything in my spine, but I know that I pulled many muscles, and I am quite bruised up. Anyhow, do you think that I should go and get an x-ray just to be on the safe side? I haven't... (3 replies)
... I am so sorry for all your pain! That is just terrible. I guess the only thing I could say to you is that you should go see a neurosurgen or an orthopedist and stop going to a chiropractor. Get some mri's and x-ray's done and go from there. Best of luck Alison  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~` Age: 24 April, 2004: Found out that I will have surgery on June 17. He... (9 replies)
... Hi, My doc said that it could take up to a year to fuse,so they wouldn't be sure of anything until then. My doc had lied to me and told me that I was fused and he didn't want anything more to do with me. I got another doc and he says that my body just rejected the BMP. I have met 6 other people that BMP also didn't work on them and they had to go... (5 replies)
... All I have to say about BMP is why not give yourself the best chance at fusing and getting out of pain? I am now having to do this all over again because of that stupid BMP stuff. I am now having bone taken from my pelvis and rods and screws put in. I know that you probably didn't want to hear from me, but I just want people to know that BMP doesn't have the great record... ... Hi, If you read my history you will see that my cages are currently moving due to the BMP not growing and not fusing anything together. My pain just keeps getting worse. Since you are only 3 weeks post op, there is no way to tell yet, but at 6 months if you are still in pain, you should definitly talk to your doc. I was doing very well until 6 months post op, then the pain... (5 replies)
... Hi, :bouncing: I can't remember if I have already posted to you about something else or not, but I am having my 3rd back surgery June 17. (I'll be thinking of you being in the hospital the same time as me, it's too bad that we can't use computers in the hospital so we can compare how we are feeling) :D . I am on my second fusion attempt, because the first fusion try I... (18 replies)
... I am so happy for you! You must be so happy to be out of pain! I can't even remember what that feeling is like anymore. I sure hope my 3rd surger (June 17) will be a success also! Best of luck to you! And thanks for posting your wonderful news with all of us! Lord knows, that we could all use some words of encouragement like yours. :) Thanks again! Alison ... (9 replies)
... UGGG!!! I know how you feel. I work at a school, and we are to have an earthquake drill this morning, and they expect me to STAND outside for 10 minutes. I explained to them that if I stand, for 10 minutes i'll be in too much pain to come back to work today. He just gave me a funny look. I don't get people. You tell them that you are having your 3rd back surgery (and i'm... (7 replies)
... Hi, I have been skimming though these posts, and I just had to give my 2 cents in about BMP. I had BMP used in my last surgery (ALIF, L5-S1 with cages). My body rejected the BMP and so my fusion failed. If I had just used my own bone from the beginning I would have most likely fused just fine. Also, My cousin had the same surgery as me (also using BMP) and her body... (21 replies)
... Hi, I know just how you feel. Since I started having back pains/surgeries everyone has been asking me about having children. All my doc's said that it would be just fine, but I really believe (for me) that it would be a disaster. I don't want to hurt my back anymore. My husband and I are so excited because we have decided to adopt a baby from China. We can hardly wait!... (6 replies)
... I'm so sorry for your pain! I have gained about 30 pounds since I started having back surgeries 3 years ago. I am able to walk on my treadmill and use my recumbant bike though. I'm not sure what to write to you for advice, but maybe you can cut your calories down. I have started counting calories and I have already lost 4-5 pounds in almost 2 weeks. Best of luck, and I... ... Hi, I am 24 years old and my husband and I have always planned on having children. Since my back problems have started we have decided to adopt (And we also believe that this is the Lord's way for us to have children). We are so excited! Every once in a while when I see a pregnant woman I feel a little bad, but I know that the daugther that we adopt from China is just... (9 replies)
... It sounds like you and I are in the exact same boat. As you can read from my history my fusion has failed also. I am scheduled for surgery (taking bone from my pelvis and adding rods and screws to stabalize the cages) on June 17. Did you use BMP? My doc says that I am in the pain because my cages are moving and the rods and screw will hold the cages in so tight that much... (2 replies)
... Hi, If you check out my history you can see that I have had some back stuff. I am 24 years old. We sound like we have a lot in common with this terrrible back pain. The last surgery I had (Anterior Interbody Fusion with BAK cages and BMP). It has been over a year since that one, and I have found out that I failed to fuse because of the BMP. My body rejected and my cages... (1 replies)
