Mark1e, there were several reports on tv etc. saying that is possibly why he had the problem. As usual, we don't get the full story, so who really knows.

From what I have seen over the years, Dick Clark was the big spokesperson for Lipitor, yet he still had a stroke. Still say noone has a total answer for some of these problems, it is mostly a guessing game. JMHO

As far as going off statins cold turkey, many people like myself have, and yes, my cholesterol went up quite abit, then leveled off within a year.
Bill Clinton was clearly not such a patient. While he exercised regularly and appeared vigorous, he also smoked cigars regularly, had bad eating habits and was hardly compliant. His surgeon, Craig R. Smith, chief of cardiovascular surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, told me in an interview that Clinton had had chest pain on exertion for quite some time, probably indicating heart disease, and that he had high blood pressure and was on a cholesterol-lowering drug -- which he stopped taking when his cholesterol level dropped. (That last is a common patient mistake, said lipid expert John Larosa, president of SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn: "Patients get a good report, so they think they can stop the medicine. That's wrong. You haven't cured the problem. You're just managing it.")
And even Life Extension:
Interestingly, Clinton was prescribed cholesterol-lowering medication before he left the White House, but decided on his own to stop taking the drug after losing some weight. Without first verifying that LDL and cholesterol levels are in safe ranges using a simple blood test, discontinuing any lipid-lowering therapy is a risky strategy. Regrettably, side effects from cholesterol-lowering drugs cause some patients to stop taking them without informing their doctors.4
For those who decide they don't want to take statins (a notable goal):
Now consider what happens to people who take the opposite approach: a low-fat vegetarian diet. A study published last year in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that a meat-free diet high in soluble fiber and soy protein lowered serum cholesterol concentrations about as effectively as statin drugs. Other research has found that people adopting a low-fat vegetarian diet see a significant drop in cholesterol levels in just six weeks. A recent review in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology confirms what many heart specialists have been saying for years, that normal human cholesterol levels are much lower than the vast majority of Americans are able to achieve. Such levels are achieved and maintained by eliminating animal fats from the diet, and human populations that do so do not develop atherosclerosis.
HI JJ
DID YOUR LEVELS GO UP RIGHT AWAY? DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OFF? AND WHAT DO YOU DO FOR YOUR CHOLESTEROL NOW, I APPRECIATE YOU GIVING ME ADVICE AND LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR REPLY.
oliveblake....I was not on Statins very long when I went off, maybe 5 months. My numbers went up the next test, which was 3 months later, then next test, 6 months later they leveled off, but still were not great so they tried me on a few other statins and Welchol, but as I said, I didn't seem to tolerate anything very well so I got ticked and tossed everything.

It has about 3 years off anything, and to be honest, sometimes the numbers do fairly well, even met the guidelines 2 times, and other times they are borderline high. Last test 2 months ago really sucked, but I also had been sick for 2 months, nasty Diarrhea on and off for 2 months, upper respiratory infection, so I doubt that helped. Last 2 tests before that were pretty good.

Only thing I do is eat oatmeal each morning, take a 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of ground cinnamon, take 500 mgs. vitamin C in the a.m. with multi vitamin and after supper, a calcium pill, garlic pill, and an extra 500 mgs. of vitamin C. I also do drink alot of Green tea, I like Bigelow w/Lemon. Naturally I watch my diet, especially carbs, as my blood sugar has been averaging about 112, and I don't want it going up any further, plus it helps keeps Trigs down.

Except for trying to get some exercise, there really isn't much else I do, but I really need to get my butt in gear with the exercising, as I have been REALLY off schedule with it the last few months. Yes, after I went off cholesterol meds. I started to feel better, but it took a few months, some folks, like my husband, who was on them for almost 7 years, is now suffering with PN. We both say, if we knew then what we know now, we would have never taken them, but that is just us, as some folks do not have problems with cholesterol meds. Like anything, it has to be an individual's choice.

Hope that helped, and best wishes......
