Cholesterol is 229
Jul 21, 2010
My HDL and Triglycerides were within limits but the LDL was 157 and the total Cholesterol is 229. Is that high? She put me on lipitor and I've supplemented the COQ-10. I also have started fish oil-the dietician that she had me see said it was great for lowering cholesterol but if it raises the LDL should I not take it since it's high now?

Also, does stress raise your levels? I have been under a lot of stress the last couple of years and that's when it went up. In fact, it went up right after I was diagnosed with High blood pressure. Now the BP is normal-the last time I took meds my readings went down to 89/59! Since going off the meds my readings have been normal.

Now, aren't they supposed to put you statins if you have risk factors? I've looked at the list and I have none-I don't smoke, not overweight, no family history of heart problems and no heart problems myself.

So what's the poop here? Should I really be on a statin? Is it worth the risks of being on them?
Have you tried avoiding or reducing trans-fats from hydrogenated oils, saturated fats, sugars, and fast digesting carbohydrates?

I'm starting to do that now. I switched from regular yogurt to non-fat, gone to 2% cheese and milk(the dietician said to start with the 2% milk than go to the others slowly so I can get used to them). The cakes I used to have for breakfast are gone and now I'm going to eat Cheerios with the 2% milk for breakfast and have a banana. I switched to the lowest saturated fat lunch meats I can find. I'm also going to cut out the ice cream and see what else they have. I'm not a fan of red meat so that's not a problem. I think the cakes and chocolate milk I've been having everyday hasn't helped the LDL level-they are just loaded with the saturated fats. And the potato chips and cheez its. So I am trying to adjust my diet.

I do go for a 3 mile walk every day but I have to put that on hold for a while because I'm having foot surgery on Friday for arthritis and bone spurs. It really hurts to walk but I so it anyway. I need the surgery on both feet so hopefully when they are done walking and exercise will be a lot easier.

The dietician said the sugars effect the triglycerides and they are normal now. I don't eat a lot of sweets like candy and soft drinks. My drink of choice is water.

Could you do swimming or wheelchair to exercise without aggravating your foot trouble?

I don't swim and don't have a wheelchair. It's not THAT bad. I'm sure a couple of weeks of no exercise won't hurt though.
