... You'll need to ask your doctor for a prescription for a VAP lipoprotein test. I think there are two other types (NMR and Berkley), so those would be fine too. If your doctor balks at the idea, saying insurance won't pay for it, or some other nonsense, tell him that almost all insurances pay for VAP testing, and it's cheaper or the same price as normal lipid testing. If you... (8 replies)
... Well, this is one contest I didn't want to win, but it looks like I am. Hi folks, new to the board. To say I'm scared is an understatement. I am 47, diabetic (Type 1), have been for 23 years. I have a heavy history of heart disease in my family. I was having shortness of breath, went for a full workup, and got bad news. I have a calcium score of 640. My total... (6 replies)
... I'd suggest asking for a VAP lipoprotein test (or NMR, Berkley, whatever flavor your doctor likes), and tests for c-reactive protein and homocysteine. The VAP test will be much more accurate than a regular lipid test and show particle sizes. Due to your low triglycerides, you have an excellent chance of having large particle LDL, which is mostly harmless. If you and your... (3 replies)

... I use BJ's brand (called Berkley and Jensen). The price is high but I think it's the cheapest around. I pay about $28 for 120 softgels of the 100 mg. strength and I take one a day so it's about $7/month. (6 replies)
... I remember reading in one of Dr. Atkins' books about a study involving fish oil, which showed a group cholesterol level dropping from 370 to 204. But the daily dose was 60 grams. Yes, that's 60 large fish oil capsules. So I guess it's possible to have as low a cholesterol as you want; it's only a matter of how much fish oil you're willing to burp. Anyway, right now... ... zip2play, Speaking of fish oil supplements, are you still using the Berkley & Jensen brand? If you are, have you noticed that they changed the label somewhat? Not only that, but the two capsule serving size used to contain a total of 360mg EPA and 240mg DHA. Not anymore. A two capsule serving now contains only 300mg EPA and 200mg DHA. Oh well, so much for progress. But I... (15 replies)
... Zip2play: We also have a BJ's in our area. They carry a Berkley & Jensen brand of fish oil which is quite affordable. You can get a bottle of 300 capsules for about $7.00 or $8.00. Although they were not evaluated by Consumer Reports, they may still be just as good. (10 replies)
