I'm not sure what kind of doctor I'm supposed to be going to for my problem. It seems a lot of you are going to gastro doctors. I have been seeing a colon & rectal doctor. Just wondering what the difference is. Here is my problem: I have had hemmorhoids for years now and occasionally had bleeding but nothing like I have been in the last few weeks. There is bright red blood in the toilet, streaks on the outside stool and blood on the toilet paper. I went to the colon/rectal dr. and he banded a hem inside. Well I'm still having blood but not as much as before, and not every time. I have also been having dull aches in my lower abdomen which I'm not sure is relatated. When I sit down I can feel this pain in my abdomen, like something is pushing on something inside. Also when I push on my rectum area I can feel this ache. Could the hems be causing this pain? When the dr. did the exam and was pushing on my insides I did not feel this pain. It''s only when I sit down or move a certain way while I'm sitting. I always think the worst and can't help but think cancer. I'm 35 y.o. I have a follow up on the 31st and will discuss with him but if anyone has any input I would appreciate it.

The main difference between a gastroenterologist and the "colorectal" doctor that you're seeing is that the former is a physician trained in internal medicine, and the latter is a physical trained in general surgery and who has a special interest in colorectal surgery. In other words, you could have seen the gastroenterologist, and he could band hemorrhoids, or scope you, but he doesn't do invasive surgery.

As for your complaints.....even though it must've been very distressing to see that much blood in the toilet bowl, it's not really THAT big of a deal because it's most probably due to your hemorrhoids. If you, however, were having bloody diarrhea, or blood mixed within the stool, or things like weight loss, or a bowel obstruction, THEN you would worry about what I'm SURE is on your mind....i.e. colorectal cancer.
