... Thanks guys, from what I had read it seemed that it was only useful if, overtime it consistantly goes up. Alison, that is the first time I have actually seen that kind of reference to the actual numbers, thanks. One site did go as far to say if the number was really high then it is indicative of cancer. I don't honestly know if there was a baseline test done at the time... (8 replies)

... The way it was explained to me is that the first treatment attacks the cancer cells and they explode in response to the chemo, creating the rise in numbers. I always visualized it like the Raid commercial! However, if it does not come down, then I would have a new scan and deal with a change in chemo. LDM (2 replies)

... How depressing! I have heard that once you have reached Stage 1V, you cannot be cured but treatment can prolong life while we hope for a miracle. I have still read of Stage 1V patients who have been clear of cancer for many years though, so again, it is probably statistically unlikely to be cured, but individually, anything can happen!
