I've just been talking to my mother and she said when an abscess is discovered dentists are supposed to try antibiotics first before going on to an operation. Is that true? Because I've never heard of that myself.
It depends, I think on the size of the abscess, and if it hurts you or not. I had a root canal and they gave me antibiotics after the root canal, but not before. But if it is already very painful, they will try to get it to calm down before doing the root canal, so you will have less pain.

I took 500mg 4 times daily for a week before having my root canal. I had very little pain but my dentist said it was inflamed. She told me the root canal would be alot easier and less painful if there was no infection present. The root canal was a breeze :)...nothing like the stories you hear !

Good Luck,

RW
