... I have been taking both metformin and avandia combined for quite some time now. Metformin is the generic form of glocophage (sp) which gave me terrible diarrhea, and eventually the glucophage was not digesting in my stomach so it was not working. ... I don't know about the Glucophage, but I was on Metformin for 3 weeks. I had SEVERE diarreah, I mean SEVERE. Never did lower my sugars much, am now on Actos, 30 mg, and still not lowering my sugars enough. Not sure what will happen now, have blood test next week. I am a new Diabetic and never dreamed it would be this hard.

... Ingredident wise, there doesnt seem to be a difference in the two prescriptions. There have been people who have a problem with Glucophage XR. It seems to cause stomach discomfort and constipation in some people. Everything I have read says that it is the extended release formula that does this.
