... Niacin's claim to fame is its ability to raise HDL rather than to lower triglycerides. Have your hubby try sugar and alcohol restriction for a couple months and have a retest. (2 replies)

My triglyceride level was much higher than your husband's (396) and i was prescribed somekind of medicine which i can't remember the name. after reading the 2 page list of side effects i decided to try it out with diet and exercise. after 8 months my triglyceride level is within normal range (well almost but i figure at this rate i will be soon). niacin is found... ... My husband was just prescribed 500 mg of niacin a day with a baby aspirin for his cholesterol. His tri's are at 277. This is supposed to be the first step before taking a medication. My hubby has started watching his diet and exercising and I told the dr this thinking maybe he could try this before the niacin and see if that works but he said he didn't think it would drop...
