Digestive Disorders Board Index

Hello,

I am asking for any help with a digestive problem that I cannot, in any meaningful way, bring under control, and which is affecting very negatively my life.

First, the diagnosis: an endoscopy revealed evidence of erosive gastritis and esophagitis. An aspirate for pH showed a result of 4. A duodenal aspirate for SIBO showed no bacterial overgrowth. I am still expecting the results from the H. Pylori biopsy.

My problems began 8 weeks ago. I came back to the US from Europe and started having symptoms consistent with those of a stomach flu/bacterial infection: bad abdominal cramps after every meal, gas, and some mucus in my stools for 5-6 days. Then I started getting bloated for no reason after each meal. When I was advised to try Florastor (a probiotic yeast), I started having terrible burning (heartburn/reflux?), which I am still unable to bring under control. At present I get burning (moderate to severe) from pretty much any food and any drink, even if it is plain water. I lost about 20 lbs (I've always been skinny and now I am very, very skinny) and can't afford to go longer without adequate food.

I tried a number of things that did not help:

1. Before the problems began, I have been taking Protonix (pantoprazole) every day for about two weeks after an ENT doctor prescribed the pills for "evidence of reflux." Whether the Protonix in some way caused my problems, remains a mystery.

2. After I saw a gastroenterologist who performed the endoscopy, I took Zegerid and carafate for a week but they made matters worse - now I have constant burning after each meal and each glass of water. Before the medications, the burning was frequent but not constant. Tried also lansoprazole, famotidine, and conventional antacids - they were either of no help or made the problem worse. Baking soda in water helps very little. Organic Apple Cider Vinegar did not help earlier and in my current state, I am unwilling to try it again.

2. Tried DGL licorice, slippery elm, zinc carnosine (PepZin GI) supplements for about 2 weeks - no help.

3. Tried digestive enzymes that have, among other ingredients, pepsin and Betaine HCL, thinking that the problem might be related to low acid production: once again, they seem to have made matters worse, or did not help at all.

4. Honey definitely makes matters worse. So do proteins (meat and dairy), and bread.

5. Tried drinking freshly squeezed raw carrot and potato juice + the jelly that remains after boiling flax seed in water. I drank these about 30 min. before eating - not much help.

I am out of any ideas and in misery every day. Nothing seems to help with the burning symptoms. My stomach/chest burns after each meal/drink (the burning usually starts 5-20 minutes later). My throat is irritated and my mouth often feels like it's on fire. I am bloated almost all the time and often have foul-smelling gas for days.

As I said, the EGD showed signs of erosive gastritis and esophagitis. My bloodwork, however, was absolutely fine. I would welcome any suggestions what to do. Has anyone had a similar problem, and how did you manage to calm down the stomach inflammation?
Same symptoms, I jumped Gastro doc, the new doc wasn't afraid to eradicate h pylori. I'm on triple treatment and prilosec for 14 days. Try to look for a national or regional ranked doctor close to as most of them are up to date with treatments.
