Hi Cheryl,

I am not familar with probiotics from Natrual Factors but I look it up online and of course the ad says it's good. I will try it in the future-- thanks.

When you buy a probiotic supplement containing acidophilus & bifidus, it needs to be kept in the refrigerator because it is gradually destroyed by heat even at room temps. Also, if it is not coated so that it gets through your stomach acids --- it should be taken on an empty stomach. Particularly at bedtime because your stomach is empty.
It still takes awhile to re-establish normal gastrointestial flora.

I take Essential Enzymes by Source Natruals and I think it is a good digestive aid formular.

I have found that the pain in the abdomenal area is many times caused by a lack of magnesium in a persons diet--- You could try taking a magnesium supplement-- even though alot of foods contain magnesium -- it is estimated that about 80 % of people still are deficient. Every cell in your body contains magnesium and lacking it can cause muscle spasms and cramping -- a big cause of pain anywhere if there is nothing physically wrong!

There are 2 web sites in the Information Archive at the top of this page that you may find helpful:
Controlling Gas and the Miracle of Magnesium-- I think the one on gas is post#1 and the one about magnesium is on page 4.

Also, soy is not as healthy as many people think. I suggest you do a search about it and make up your own mind.

God Bless---Harry
Harry,

I started taking the probiotics about 6 days ago and the gas went away and the bloating was better, although not 100% gone. I know you said it can take awhile. About 3 days ago I started the digestive enzymes, the bloating is much better, but now I have a lot of gas and some abdominal discomfort. Also the past few mornings, I have had a little diarrhea, but then I'm fine the rest of the day in that regard. I have aso seem to have lost my appetite, although I am still eating when my stomach feels empty, I'm just not craving any foods, which is so unusual for me! This morning I woke up with a sore throat, I feel like I'm getting a cold. I'm wondering if these are side effect of either the probiotics, enzymes or both. If so, will these symptoms go away and after how long?

I read the links you directed me to and found it interesting, especially the article regarding magnesium. I also read another thread about how magnesium helped so much that people got off their PPIs. I will get some magnesium tomorrow as I want to get off of Protonix. The only problem is I am a little nervous about getting off the PPI because my mom had esophageal cancer and now my brother has esophagus ulcers even though he didn't have any symptoms. He only had an endoscopy done because of my mom's situation. I don't know if it has been proven that there is a genetic component with esophagus problems. My brother is very healthy, so I was surprised by his diagnosis. I've never been diagnosed with Gerd, and my endoscopy showed everything was normal. Outside of some chest pains, which I believe is gas not heartburn, I don't have any problems with it. It also sounds like taking PPIs long term can cause other problems, such as bacteria overgrowth. I wonder if my problems are because of the protonix. I've been on it since April and that is when I started to experience these symptoms on occasion, although it has only been during the past 6 weeks that is is a daily problem. Anyway, sorry to ramble on, I'm just not sure which way to go at this point. Do I stick with the probiotic, enzymes and magnesium? Is it okay to take them together? Should I get off the protonix? I have an appointment with a GI in October, so I may hold off on the stopping the protonix until that time. Although I have read that many doctors don't recognize the long-term effects of PPIs, or the possibility that acid reflux is caused by low stomach acid. Anyway, I will stop my rambling now. Thanks for reading this and any advice you have would be much appreciated.

Warmest Regards,

Cheryl :)
