With regards to the "gas" going through the retinal tear/hole, of course, you are right, it can but the scenario I was assuming was slightly different: first, pre-vit op, normal eye liquid/no air-bubble, then retinal tear, then liquid goes behind the retina and peels it leading to retinal detachment; then, vitrectomy op, laser treatment...
