Aircast is Painful
Sep 30, 2016
I broke the bottom portion of my tibia and fibula on my right leg / ankle 6 weeks ago today. I had surgery the next day and had a plate and screws on the outer part of ankle and screws on inner. I was in soft splint for 1 week post op and then moved to Aircast XP. The pain was unbearable - burning sensation on top of foot. Honestly I think there was too much swelling/ inflammation for it that soon. Additionally it was so heavy I was unable to steady myself on the knee walker. Went to a hard cast for two weeks and then today was put back in boot. I did not experience pain in the office like I did previously so I thought all was well. However, after being up and about on knee walker (still non weight bearing) the boot feel extraordinarily heavy and is sliding up and down on my foot / leg which is not keeping my heel far enough down in the boot. when this happens and I'm moving it causes pain due to the weight of the boot bearing down on the top of my foot.

The ortho put me in a size Medium, but I only wear a size 6 (womens) shoe. I'm thinking it could be too big for me. Any advice??? I don't want to go back to cast because I'm ready to progress further with moving and preventing more heel issues. I'm only 38 and feel so weak that this boot is bothering me this much. HELP!!!
