Hello everyone. Can you tell me about ankle instability? I currently have a torn peroneal tendon and plan on having surgery this summer to repair. I know that a torn tendon can cause instability, but what does that feel like? Can you have instability only sometimes or every time you walk it is unstable? Lately I’ve had what I call “zingers” on the inside of my ankle. A pain that just kinda hits me. I am wondering if that is the instability that people talk about. It doesn’t happen everyday, but like maybe once or twice a week and usually happens when I am barefoot getting out of the shower; otherwise I wear a brace. Without the brace, my ankle doesn’t really feel too weak - only when I walk down the stairs without shoes. When I have my brace on, then it feels better. Is this something you suggest I contact my doc about? What I’m not sure about is that the “zingers” are on the other side of my ankle. Kinda by the knobby bone but forward a little and up a little on the foot (hard to describe). It hurts for a while, but not like terrible pain. Maybe a 2 or 3. Could it be something else? Thanks!

I used to be as flat footed as any duck and therefore had ankle instability. Even though I played tennis and ran, I could not ice skate or roller skate and for years I thought it was something that was inherited. Your ankles are weak because your hips are weak and your ankles, hips are not working as one. This can cause all sorts of problems and I speak from experience. I wore orthotics and they make me even weaker. Found a man who has strengthened all of this and I now have a beautiful arch. Please do not let anyone cut you until you have looked into getting a trainer or going into yoga of some sort. I was walking only on my bones, if you can believe it. Now, I have nice padding on my feet. Years ago, I had bunions removed and if I had known, then, what I know now, about strengthening, I never would have let a doctor touch me. Good luck.
