I had 5 screws and 5 pins in my right foot after surgery on September 15, 2003. Two of the pins were removed approximately 7 weeks after surgery. That was done in the office and was completely painless. One of the screws started to come out. I could see the bump under my skin. Actually the doctor told me that it wasn't coming out but that the swelling went down more than he anticipated. I had it taken out when I had bunion surgery on my left foot. The screw removal is NO big deal. I think they made a 1/4" incision and I got 2 or 3 stitches. Some doctors can do it in the office although my doctor doesn't. If I was only having the screw removed my doctor said I would not have to get the pre-surgery physical. I think they remove the screw with a shot of novacaine. Good luck!

Hi supermom802,
Wow you had a lot done to your foot, hope it is healing nicely. Although I personally wouldn't say that having the screw out is no big deal, at least to me it wasn't. After 3 shots in my foot of local ans..he and another dr. went to work to get the screw out. I found it all a bit scarey, and unnerving actually, but am glad it is over. I can see why most Dr.'s do it in the OR. But you are right, I avoided all the pre-surgery stuff and am happy about that. Stitches come out Tuesday, and today my foot is not too sore.
Best of luck to you, hope you heal quickly.
Best, Sue
Rileyroe,

I am suprised that a doctor could tell that your screws need to be removed via a phone conversation. Did he have x-rays to look at? My surgeon is known for exhausting every option before performing surgery. I could see the bump under my skin that was a screw head. My surgeon said it had to come out. It stuck out at least 1/4". My surgery was in September on that foot. I still think that it is no big deal tohave a screw removed. When was your surgery? My latest surgery was in February. I had swelling from my last surgery for about 4 months. Good luck!

Hi Supermom802,
Well you are a tougher woman than I, really a superwoman!
I thought it was much harder emotionally speaking, having the screw out in the dr.'s office, than my toe fusion last year with IV sedation in the OR.
I am impressed, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Hi Susie,
I agree with you..wasn't that a nightmare??..the shots and the poking, pulling etc. Glad to know someone else was emotionally freaked out by the whole thing. I didn't even look to see how big the screw was, I hid behind a mag. the entire time! Just was really glad when it was over. Heal quickly..
Best, Sue
HI Sue,

Thanks for the reply. My brother is 61 and has had alot of surgeries in his life including a couple of operations on his heart. He had bunion surgery about 4 weeks ago and just had his one screw out and another put in.He also said there is no way in He-- he would ever do that again under local. He said, that was the worst thing he has been through.Just some FYI... Susie
I haven't had my surgery yet (7/23) but my ortho is using 2 dissolvable screws. Any body else have these? Yikes, what if they decide to move around b4 they are completly dissolved & there is not enough screw left to get the problem pcs. out.
