Hallux Limitus ?
Mar 21, 2004
Hi all,

I had surgery for advanced Hallux Limitus about 3 weeks ago. So far things are going pretty good. I have a few questions for anyone who has had surgery for this problem.

I don't remember the name of the procedure I had done, but it entailed cutting off all the bone spurs, cleaning out the joint, and then then cutting the metatarsal bone vertically and both shortening the metatarsal bone and lowering the joint and then screwing it back together. I am to be totally non weight bearing on that foot for 6 weeks and then at least a week in the "big old boot".

At this point the podiatrist has me working on range of motion. Is it normal to not be able to move the toe without actually pushing on it? I can only move it a very little amount without pushing it.

Also when I do push it up it kinda clicks or pops a couple of times. Is that normal? It did that when the Dr. checked the range of motion on my last visit and he didn't seem to think it was unusual.

How often is everyone else working on the range of motion? How long do you hang in there moving the toe around?

How long to normal usage of the foot?

Scott,

I'm surprised your doctor has you working on bending your toe when your bone can't be healed yet. While my surgery was different than yours (I had a right bunionectomy), my orthopedic surgeon didn't recommend range of motion exercises for my (stiff) big toe until my bone was completely healed, I believe at 8 weeks.

If anybody else is reading this, when did your doctor recommend toe exercises to loosen up the joint? Does it strike you the same way it does me, that 3 weeks seems really early for this?
