Re: To TPalmer

Hi, CLC. I'll do my best to answer all your questions. I'm a 47-year-old male. My feet had very high arches, which also caused all of my toes to claw. My heels also were misaligned. Made finding comfortable shoes difficult, and after decades of walking, jogging, pounding on poorly formed feet, I finally decided to do something about them. I had prescription orthotics for several years prior, and they helped a little. But I got tired of my feet constantly hurting every time I took a walk, played ball with my sons, went on a backpack, etc. Plus, my right foot (which I had done first) formed a spur on the top due to improper foot function, and that was really painful at times. I had no other health problems; just bum feet. My doctor did a series of osteotomies to lower my arches, and realigned my heels, too. He also did tendon releases to relax my clawed toes. I am glad I had them done (first one May 2003, second in October 03). But I don't want to sugarcoat it: it really is a long recovery -- and I did not have bunions on top of it all, as you indiciated you do. I was on crutches, non-weight-bearing, for 8 weeks, and then it took me another three weeks to wean off crutches, both feet. And there was a fair amount of soreness and tenderness for several months. (I didn't do physical therapy; just started walking and jogging as soon as I felt ready and doc said it was OK). Painful feet are no fun, and I really sympathize with your situation. I hope this information helps you in some way, and I hope you'll keep me apprised of your decision.
