hello there. i had surgery on 8/1 to have a screw put in my 5th metatarsal. well while i was in the cast, i complained of bad pain in the back of my calf but they were not concerned. i had my cast off 4 weeks ago and my foot and calf are still really swollen but the pain has mostly subsided. the doctor had told me to expect the swelling for a while and it may be 6 months before i could get it comfortably into a shoe.

anyway, i went today for a 4 week f/u appointment and he said "wow, it's really swollen." so now he thinks i have a blood clot. he wanted me to go right away for an ultrasound but they can't get me in until tomorrow at 1:30.

i was just wondering if anyone had any issues with blood clots after surgery? i am really hoping that is not the case because my mother has had them before and she is on coumadin now and it's the last thing i want to do, especially at my age. i am only 38 yo and would hate to end up on that now.

thanks for listening! : )
Hi - blood clot is in the realm of possibilities - an ultrasound would detect it. If you have a clot and they put you on coumadin it will only be on a temporary basis. BUT it has to be diagnosed -if they can't fit you in for an ultrasound then go to the ER. Blood clots are SERIOUS and can be deadly. If it's not a clot then GREAT ! At least you will have peace of mind. If you are cleared then don't forget to do your ROM to keep your circulation going - clot free !

I know its been awhile since this affair for you. I like to know how this all turned out for you. Im currently in the same situation having the Jones fracture surgery in July 0f 2008 and now about 6 months later am still have severe swelling in the calve. I too had the concern and was tested for a clot but I tested negative. Just searching for any ideas to my situation. Thanks so much!
