Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I am 3 weeks post of for an austin bunionectomy and can tell you that the incision is right over the bony-lookin vein that pops up when you lift your big toe. It runs about 4 inches long and is very thin. I of course haven't healed completely so I can't tell you about fading just yet.

While it is somewhat of a trade off, there are lots of things you can do to diminish the appearance of the inevitable scar. Given my doctor's 'ok,' I have been taking vitamin E supplements as well as Omega3 fish oil, which help decrease the production of fibron (scar tissue). As soon as I am able to manually manipulate the scar I plan to massage it multiple times daily with cocoa butter or bio oil or vitamin E (doesn't really matter). I am also told that 'sillicone gel sheeting' works wonders to heal the scar quickly. It supposedly helps the scar fade sooner and makes the scar flatter. Its sorta pricey (around $100 per reusable sheet) but you can find this through your doctor or online.

I don't plan on being a foot model or anything but I hope to heal my scars as best as possible. Then, whatever bit of scarring is left I will wear like a badge or honor.
