Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

Well It has been 9 weeks since I had Bunion surgery and fusion of the First MT bone. Week 8 they told me I could start weight bearing either with a stiff soled shoe or with my cast. I choose the cast - as I wasn't comfortable walking without my boot yet. At first I thought I would never be able to walk again, I could do a hop and a step and then my foot would hurt. So I kept the crutches around and walked with the crutches as well. I started physio on Monday and after one physio treatment I can walk without the crutches in my boot and it is a normal walk. The physio told me to get some good sandals - as they would be easier to get on with the swollen foot. So I bought a pair of Nike adjustible sandals and they work great. I can take about one step without the cast on and that is it. I go to Physio again tomorrow and we are going to work on walking without the cast on - just a sandal on my foot. The doctor was concerned about the swelling - so i got fitted for a compression sock - which the physio told me will make a huge difference for me. One thing to remember is to the stretches as often as possible, it does hurt, but it will be worth it in the end. I thought I was doing all the stretches the right way until I saw the physio and he told me I was doing it wrong. I have done the proper stretches for about an hour a day for the last three days and I can already feel a world of difference. My foot doesn't hurt to badly at the end of the day. Anyways just some encouragement for those of you who are about to start walking again. Hope everyone's recovery is going as smoothly as mine.
