Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

The problem with a lapidus fusion is that the angle of the 1st metatarsal has to be right or there will be problems afterwards with pain under the forefoot. The lapidus procedure also shortens the bone more than a traditional Austin type bunionectomy and that is why people have to have the 2nd metatarsal shortened which is not an exact procedure either on how much to shorten. The Lapidus has been the procedure of the month for bunions for a few years now but I believe way too many are being done that would be doing just fine with the Austin bunionectomy for mild to moderate or the closing base wedge bunionectomy for severe bunions. As for bunionpain it sounds like you had a lot of work done any of which could be causing your continued problems.
