Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

Hello All. I am new and have some questions. I had bunion surgery on my left foot a week ago tomorrow. I saw my doc today and he changed my dressing. I luckily have no pins or screws but still have stiches for another 10 days. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect in the next few weeks. How much mobility will I have, what happens after stiches are out, etc. I also have a question about range of motion exercises of the big toe. The Doc moved it like 10 times at the office and I about passed out. The discomfort was pretty severe. He told me to try to do the exercises a couple times a day. I tried again tonight and about passed out and puked during the exercise due to discomfort and pain. I was off pain medicine and I am back on tonight because of the discomfort from trying to put more weight on the foot and doing these exercises. Did anyone experience this? How much do I need to push myself to exercise and put weight on the foot? Is 6 days too soon? I will have to do bunion surgery on my right foot next. I want to ensure I push myself so I can heal from the first surgery in in a few weeks..but I don't want to push myself so hard since it is painful.

Thanks so much!
Once you get the stitches out and can wash your foot, try warming it up in the warm/hot water before doing the exercises. I found when I had my cheilectomy that it helped a lot to do them when I took a bath!

Thanks for the advice. Once I get stitches out next Friday, I will give this a try. Thanks!
Welcome to the Board. If you have no pins or screws I'm guessing you did not have an osteotomy (cutting the bone through and re-setting)? Was the bunion shaved off? I had bunionectomies on either side of my right foot with osteotomies and temporary pins last May. I would caution you to not walk too much right away. Your suture site is healing and it can be very uncomfortable if the scar site is pulled at. I had internal stitiches also, and I think that is standard, so healing is happening below the site. Bending the toe is uncomfortable at first. There are many threads on this board about gaining mobility in your toe. Healing takes time, but it will happen. I know my mind was ready to get up and go but my foot had other ideas.
Good luck.
Thank you very much for the info. I really appreciate it.
I am assuming they either shaved or cut the bunions. Not sure about cutting the bone through. I had a bunion on the big toe towards the top of the toe and had a metatarsal bunion. My Doc removed both and He also had to realign the big toe and joint and he said he would be moving the ligament. I have standard non dissolvable stitches. Not sure about internal ones. My incision is a little over 5 inches long starting at the tip of the big toe down half way up the foot. Maybe I do have some internal sutures?
I'll take your advice and not walk too much until they get these stitches out next Friday. It is painful to walk even on the heel or the side of the foot and those exercises kill me. At times it does feel like I am pulling the incision or a muscle??? It feels odd.
Thanks for your help!!
