Hi I had my 1st MTP joint fused on January 25. 6 weeks in cast and 5 in boot. I am still having pain. OS says x-rays are good and is happy with the healing. I last saw him on May 6. I called the office because I am concerned about the still having pain; particularly in the sesmoid area where I had it before surgery. They are telling me nothing is mechanically wrong and it will take time. I still feel I should be better than this by now. Any inputs from anyone?
Yes, I am wearing a Wide width. Something just doesn't seem right to me. I feel I should be much better than this. How can I be overdoing something when I sit as much as I can. It's not like I am out walking at the mall all day. I have an appointment to see the OS who did the surgery on June 1. He is leaving the area the end of June!! I also made an appointment with a podiatrist here in town that I saw about a year ago when I had pain from the first surgery who recommended fusion. Yes, I need my life back. I am so depressed. I can't stop thinking about my feet. I appreciate your help because you have been thru this. I wonder if it is not fused at the right angle and it is causing pain else where now? Believe me when I say, this is ruining my life.
I do not think you need a CT scan just yet. You need to give the healing a minimum of 6 months and possibly up to 12 months. Only do what you can "to tolerance" and have patience. Yes, I have had BOTH MTP joints fused. It took a LONG time to heal and a good 12 months for the swelling to subside. It has been 4 years and 3 years and I can do everything now. I am however, limited to 1 1/2 inch heels but there is NO pain at the fusion sight.
The only other thing I can think of is that one of the screws is too long and is hitting the soft tissue under the bone. Your doctor would be able to see that the screw is too long if that was the case.
Try not to dwell on the negative. That is easy. Try to just have positive thoughts and tell yourself that all will be good with time. That is hard but the mind is VERY powerful and it can have a very POSITIVE affect.
hi, i have been out of town. the thing is, i was in a cast for 11 weeks and then a boot for 4 more weeks. so i have a problem with you doing too much too soon. would a cast help now-i dont know. is the boot helping? only you know your own body. generally if you feel that things are not right-then they are not. will they not give you a cat scan now? i feel so bad and i wish i could come there and help you. we probably had different types of surgery and i am lucky i dont feel pain when wearing the right kind of shoes. the pain you are describing does not sound normal.. that why i ask should you be in a cast instead of pt. by the way, there was no pt for my fused toe because it doesnt move. i had the pt for the swelling to go down. how swollen are you? thinking of you, debbie
I had my big toe fused, and it took me a few months to recover. I had to wear a orthopedic boot for several weeks. I told my Dr. it was throwing my back out & he put me in an orthpedic shoe, so much better... Good luck!
I had my big toe fused, and it took several months of using a walker, crutches, a orthopedic boot. I had to complain to my doc, because the boot was throwing my back out something fierce. So, he put me in an orthopedic shoe, what a difference! Ask your doc abot the shoe. Good luck! You are so right, once you start having surgeries on your feet, they continue to have more problems. After having two toes fused, one a Hammer toe, now I have to go have a Neuroma (pinched nerve) cut. I am also over weight by 50 lbs., but it hurts to do anything , much less exercise. I have been using a recumbent bike & cutting portions. That really helps to take 3 lbs. off a week. Good Luck!
hi chub, how long has it been since surgery? my mistake, a cat scan should be done at the 1 year mark. i can also do everything with the fused toe. what kind of pt are you doing for a fused toe?
