Mark - it takes a long time for the big toe to become flexible after a bunionectomy. My doctor didn't rush me at all - he had me flex my toes and do ankle circles when I was able to. He said the best thing to help with swelling was to walk, and he was right. I had bunion surgery on my left foot in Aug 09 and my right foot in Dec 09 and I'm able to run a little over a mile these days. My surgeon said it would probably be at least a year after my second surgery before I would be able to run again, but 3 months after my second surgery he said I could start running if I felt like it! I started very slow, and the more I ran the faster the swelling went down. So be patient and do what your doctor recommends. They usually know what they're talking about. ;)
