Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I had bunion and tailor bunion surgery on my right foot four years ago. I had external pins. My husband called it "Frankenfoot". My best advice is not to over-do the first week after the stitches are removed. For me that was after two weeks. I was so happy to be moving around, that I ended up being totally non-weight baring for a week. I had excruciating nerve pain near the pins. I'm fairly confident that had I been a "good" patient, I would have been fine.
The pins were removed at four weeks, at that was when the healing commenced at a good pace. I'm very pleased with the outcome, and thrilled not to have screws or plates and the problems they sometimes can cause. I am having the same operation done on my left foot this summer. It is time, and my doctor will be retiring soon, and I definitely want the same procedure.
When I had the terrible pain, it took about three days completely off the foot for the pain to go away. It may not have been the pins that were part of the problem, so please don't allow my story to deter you. By the way, my foot still looks great, so say hello to strappy sandals, and all the shoes you had to avoid before. Good Luck, and keep us posted.
