Hi,

First things first, Yes, this is not the place to ask for medical advice, I have an appointment with my doctor on Tuesday and plan to ask him all these things, but I wanted to know if I at least fit in the "norm".

One week ago I had surgery to repair a severely damaged calcaneus. They used a nerve block as well as general anesthesia.

What are some other experiences when recovering from a nerve block? The first few days in the hospital post op were sheer torture as it began to wear off. Then, it subsided and began to feel better. Today though (and less occasionally yesterday), every few hours there is a burning sensation in my foot from my big toe across the top of my foot. It wouldn't feel hotter if you scraped a hot fire poker that you removed from the Sun across it. It goes away usually in 20-70 mins. I also have little feeling in my toes and top of my foot.

Is this normal? Or did something go wrong with the nerve block? Any shared stories welcome.

Thanks. Liz

It is really weird how that thing wears off. My anestesiologist said about 12 hrs you should have feeling back. I was in hospital till sunday and it was just starting to come back. There was a lot of burning in my foot but mostly from blood rushing when I hang my leg. After one week now it is totally worn off and back yo normal. If you are still experiencing problems I would call your surgeon and not wait for your appt at least it might ease your mind . I know you start imagining all kinds of crazy things laying here . Good luck and "feel" better! Paula

I think it sounds pretty normal for the first week. Hope it settles down for you soon.
You probably have a lot of swelling which can cause numbness, maybe the pain too. I would not be too concerned, it should get better with time. You have pain meds, don't you? I took mine for several weeks after surgery. Icing your foot with a cold pack or cold boot will help the swelling go down, and you can apply it to the back of your knee if your cast or splint is big and the cold won't penetrate it. Good luck with recovery.
