Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

Hi,
I am 44 and very active. I play tennis 2 or 3 times a week. Used to run but had to stop due to foot pain. I am at the point that I need bunion surgery on my right foot. I went to three different doctors. The Orthopedist foot/ankle specialist recommended surgery without any screws but just a resorb able pin. I would be off my feet for three weeks and then in a surgical shoe for a few weeks.
The Podiatrist recommended a Long arm Austin surgery with 2 screw fixation. She said I would be up on my feet almost immediately.
The Podiatrist who works in an Orthopedic group and has the best credentials recommended a Lapidus surgery with a plate and 4 or 5 screws. He says the other 2 doctors are not addressing my hyper mobility issue in my foot. He also will cast me for 2 weeks, re X-ray and cast again for another 2 weeks.

Needless to say I am VERY CONFUSED. I am worried about having hardware in my foot but on the other hand if I do not have hardware, will the bunion just return?

What is most important to me is that I will be able to play tennis again and possibly run again.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!
