Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I had bunion surgery on my left foot on April 1 2013 and have been stunned by the amount of painful post op swelling. I am also doing anything and everything! Well, I can't believe my lucky miracle. I went to Sports Chalet and was fitted with lightweight shoes for everyday use AND inserts. The salesperson said the inserts would support the foot so that the foot wouldn't move, irritate and swell. I have gone from hobbling from place to place and spending hours each night elevating my foot to being "normal" again. I went from walking in a very slow, painful gait to being cured all in 4 days. I am feeling brave enough to try high heels soon.
I an now 12 weeks post op today. I tried the Epsom salts in a foot bath and it did not help. I have been back to all my activities and I am OK as long as I wear a good supportive and cushioned athletic shoe. Dress shoes are still a problem since I still have swelling. Now my dress shoes feel tight because the swelling is on top of my foot instead of where the bunion was. Since I live in Florida, I love to wear thong sandals but I can do so for only a short time. Ice, massage, elevation and my athletic shoes continue to be my best allies. If I had to do this again, I would do so in the winter so that by summer, I would be ready for dress sandals.
