Foot & Ankle Problems Message Board

Foot & Ankle Problems Board Index

I had horrible bunions, crooked toes and you name it for a number of years and this threw my walk way off. When things were getting worse, I had the bunion surgery and the toes straightened out and that was well over fifteen years ago. I could see where the bunions were coming back and was very upset. I had had flat feet for years as well. When it looked as if I were headed to surgery, again, I found a wonderful physical therapist who has straightened out my feet, given me an arch in both feet and made all the difference in the world. People have bunions because the body from the hips on down is not operating properly and tendons and muscles are weak. As athletic as I used to be, I found this hard to believe when I first heard it, but have come to find out that this is true. The therapist has changed my life without surgery. I BEG you to stay away from surgery and orthotics are nothing but money makers for a certain field of medicine. I wore those for years and they kept having to be made higher and higher, which, in turn, made the muscles even weaker because the muscles were not working since they relied on the inserts. One's hips, total legs and feet must all be strong. Oh, I also had very weak ankles, so that I could not ski or ice skate or water ski years ago, but I thought the weakness was something I was born with and let it go. Since being treated my ankles are much stronger, the tendons in the ankles and the feet are much looser while before they were very very tight, which caused the foot to be malformed.
