Hi there,
I will be having my hard cast removed is week! I'm a bit nervous about the next steps. I still experience significant pain occasionally and am told it could be up to a year until the pain is completely gone.

What should I expect when the cast comes off? I know I have to wear a boot for 4 weeks and I even have to sleep in it. Is it scary to go from the cast to the boot? When should I be walking again? How much does the pt hurt? How long do you go to PT?

Thanks for your help!

Ps I'll be glad to help in anyway I can if you have questions about the surgery or the recovery.

Hi Jodiemae, it's good to hear from you again. I've been thinking about you and wondering how things are going. I got my cast off at 6 weeks and went into a CAM boot for 4 more weeks of non-weight bearing after that. I could not believe how much my calf muscle had wasted away in just 6 weeks, but it sure felt good to be able to wash my foot and leg again! For the first couple of weeks a lot of dry skin flaked off, and the skin on my foot was sort-of like cheese or something. It was weird how it just kind of peeled off when I gently rubbed the wash cloth over it. I think it took about 2 weeks for all the scabs to come off. The one where he did the osteotomy was the last to fall off. It was really deep.
The beginning of weight bearing is so exciting, but yes, it is a little scary too. It feels so liberating after not walking for so long. They'll help you out with all of that at PT.
Great to hear that you did well and things are progressing normally. Good luck to you as you continue to progress.
