About two weeks ago, I fractured the distal fibula, as well have a small fracture of the talus. I was first splinted, then three days later allowed for weight-bearing, using a MaxTrax stirrup walker. The first day in it was manageable, but it quickly turned into hell.

You fracture is a very common one. If you look at the distal fibula, you will see why.
The fact that you are in a walking boot shows that the fracture wasn't a bad one.
Pain and swelling around a fracture is normal and should feel better every week. You should be going back in a week or two for more xrays to see how it is progressing.

... You'll be in a cast, but what type depends on the type of fracture (how bad it is). Simple ankle breaks end up in an aircast sometimes, or you may be in a fiberglass cast for the first 3-4 weeks, then an aircast boot. However, if the break is significant or displaced, you may need surgery, in which case you will be in a fiberglass cast.

I fractured fibula about same time you did and have a similar diagnosis--doc says tip of bone detached. I am not healing as expected and now doc says that we may have to do arthroscopic ligament surgery because ligament pull on bone is preventing reattachment. I don't have insurance either but surgery center will allow payment plan and so will doc I bet.
