I'm having an issue with my left ankle. I injured it about 2 years ago while slacklining, assumed it was a sprain but never sought treatment. It rolled outward with most of my weight on it and swelled and bruised in a way that matched a previous sprain.

... You'll be in a cast, but what type depends on the type of fracture (how bad it is). Simple ankle breaks end up in an aircast sometimes, or you may be in a fiberglass cast for the first 3-4 weeks, then an aircast boot. However, if the break is significant or displaced, you may need surgery, in which case you will be in a fiberglass cast.

... Well, minor breaks do heal to the point you can carefully start to use the limb again in about a month. For some breaks, they let you walk in a cast even sooner. Especially if you are a kid, but I'm guessing you're not.
Putting weight on it actually promotes bone density, once it's healed most of the way, and will start reversing your muscle loss.
