... Several months after the last of two failed foot surgeries to fix my Hallux Varus, I developed intense pain and swelling. It also was apparent that my big toe had shrunk. My podiatrist told me my toe "collapsed," and he'd never seen this before. He said the only recourse was to do a bone fusion. I went to a foot surgeon for a second opinion and he said my toe would never be... (2 replies)

... I had lapidus bunion fusion on 5/19/08. I researched it for along time...using these health boards. I did alot of prep before surgery. I have 2 school aged children so believe it or not I froze 18 meals! My insurance covered 95% of a roll about. It is really useful. You can stand with your knee on it in front of the bathroom mirror and blow dry your hair! Such luxury! ... (2 replies)

... WEll, if you don't have time to get your answers, postpone the surgery until you do! This is permanent! You cannot ever make a change to it. The joint at the end of the toe will still bend. The main toe joint(1st Mtp) will not. What kind of shoe you can wear will depend on many things. Like I said, I purposely had mine fused at a slightly different angle to accomodate a... (4 replies)

... I am in WI and going to Freighter Hospital with a Dr. Marks who is suppose to be top notch. He didn't mention having a choice on the lift. He said I could never have my foot go downward. He mentioned a possible 1 and 1/2 in heal if it was not angled down too much. This is my second surgery on this foot. I will mention all this at the pre op on Thursday but I don't think... ... I had mine fused this summer and my number one advice is to be sure you know EXACTLY what you will have when this is done. If they fuse the toe straight, you will not be able to wear ANY shoe that slants in. Also, they can fuse it at any angle to give you the ability to wear whatever heel height you may want. BE SURE TO DISCUSS THIS IN DETAIL with your Foot & Ankle Board... (4 replies)

... ther a joint replacement. Both options were appropriate and and I could see the benefits of each. Both surgeons felt either option was OK. I finally picked the fusion due to my age and recovery time even though I would lose some functionality that the replacement would have given me. ... (2 replies)
