... I've only been doing my toe exercises once a day (with mini-sessions throughout the day). I guess I'd better get busy or my doctor's liable to send me to physical therapy when I see him later this week. They are so inexact in their instructions. Much of the time I feel we're all at sea about what they want us to do, how much and when. Even when you ask a million questions,... (8 replies)
... Just got back from my 6-week bunion post-op visit to the doc. I was relieved to hear the stiffness in the big toe joint is normal at this stage. My toe exercises are to manually bend the joint 3 times a day for 5 min at a time as much as I can stand. He also said residual swelling & muscle pain are normal at 6 weeks & to keep my foot up in the evenings after a day of... (8 replies)

... I thought I'd give you my two cents, too..having had my bunionectomy surgery (one screw) with the removal of a bone spur at the other end of the metotarsal (sp) just last Thursday.
I was awake through most of the surgery, chatting away with the doctors and nurses, was in recovery for 20 min, my boyfriend took me out to breakfast, then we went home. This whole time I was... (13 replies)
... I was down your path 6 weeks ago when I had my bunion surgery. I had an austin and taylor bunionectomy with 4 screws in total placed in my left foot. Of course I was extremely nervous the night before and day of. ... (13 replies)
... Hi Everyone!
I'm new to these boards and am having bunion surgery on the 6th (1 week from today). I'm not sure the exact name of my procedure, but it sounds like the Lapidus procedure (taking a wedge out of the 1st metatarsal and midfoot fusion w/ screws) but I'm also having a wedge taken out in the big toe (2nd bone from the tip) and a screw put in there. Also, I will have... (13 replies)
... s extra swelling, Im 13 weeks post op and I still have swelling there, its driving me crazy, im ready to wear my work dress shoes, but unfortunatly Im still in a post op shoe until swelling goes down. My xray looks normal, as long as your bones are aligned properly, you should be fine.. ... (1 replies)
Thank you for the empathy--I really mean that. As others have said, unless you've been through this, there's no way you can really understand. My husband is very supportive and I do have faith in my doctor (even if his instructions sometimes leave a bit to be desired.) But it takes a fellow foot surgery survivor to know how long, frustrating and difficult... (8 replies)
... Happy Mama--I'll tell you about my situation last year..I had my left foot done; the Dr. discharged me at 7 weeks post-op. At that point, my foot was still swollen and very stiff and I just presumed that would disappear within a few weeks or a month...Fast forward to four months post-op and I still wasn't walking on that foot correctly because my big toe joint was SO STIFF... ... Hi Carolcrone,
Glad to hear your good report!! How exciting that you get to drive!! I'm one week behind you (5 weeks post-op) & can't wait to be realeased to drive! My family is tired of being my chaufeur & I'm tired of being so dependent. I just got a new vehicle right before my surgery, so I'm already not used to driving it, & am not going to take any chances, & will... (8 replies)
... I'm right there with you on that 4 week post-op schedule! I am exactly 4 weeks post-op today on my right foot bunionectomy. God bless those of you who had the bilateral--I know it's tough.
I felt so much better this past week than the week before. I am able to stand for much longer before my foot is "screaming". I'm driving, too, although I try to stay off the... (11 replies)

... I am glad you had a good appointment! It seems like when you have a good appointment that you feel like you are actually getting better. I did have to get a different pair of tennis shoes a little bigger, but it feels so nice to wear regular shoes!! My doctor told me that my swelling was less than average too......today is a different story!! I went back to work today, and... (11 replies)
... I'm glad to hear your news was good. Getting an occasional medical stamp of approval makes all the difference, doesn't it, in how we feel about our recovery? Does for me too. I do have a question though. What toe exercises did he give you? I'm doing toe exercises, too, but I can't imagine any that could last for 30 minutes a day. Maybe I'm way underworking my toe? But... ... and he said that does happen because the muscles and tissue have a "memory" of how it used to be and will do that to an extent. He said it doesn't look like the bunion is reforming though and the degree that it has shifted back is normal, so that's good. ... (11 replies)
... I hope you get some good answers at your appointment on Monday. I do understand somewhat the desire to return to a normal life. I am only 9 days post-op bilateral bunionectomyand I am already going crazy.I don't even have my stiches out yet so I can't interject on the size of the incisions. I think I will get them out on Friday. I can't imagine how bad it will be in another... (8 replies)
... be slanting back toward the 2nd toe again. The first 3 weeks it was definitely pointing straight forward. I have pictures that show that. Now, instead of the bunion bump, the whole area protrudes, but I'm hoping that's just continued swelling of the joint. ... (8 replies)

... Hi HappyMama!
I guess I would have to say that I walk more normal than shuffle.....I take steps, but sometimes I put the majority of my weight on the outsides of my feet and at other times I actually take normal steps...and try to bend my toe as I walk. Its feel okay when I walk normal, but I think I am scared to do it all the time!
Both of my incisons are still both... (8 replies)
... Another thing that I'm concerned about is it just seems to me that my right foot has a little bump where the bunion was and the big toe is not straight but rather is leaning in towards the second toe like it used to be. ... (8 replies)
