... Hello All, I've been looking over these forums for about a week or so and have found alot of useful information so thank you! I now have a question: I went to see a podiatrist on 10/26 because I have had flat feet all my life as well as bunions on both feet for as long as I can remember. About 2-3 weeks ago I woke up at 1:30 in the morning with screaming pain on the... (2 replies)
... All in all, I have to say that my surgery experience has been easier than I anticipated:) I had to report to the hospital last Friday, 1/21, at 6:30 am, and I was home by 10 am (including a stop through Dunkin Donuts drive thru for coffee!). I had "twilight" anesthesia and an ankle block. I did wake up towards the end of the procedure, but it wasn't a bad thing by any means.... (14 replies)
... I went to see the Orthopedic surgeon today and he has booked me in for bilateral Scarf and Akins Osteotomies on 21st of this month. I am very nervous as I am registered disabled, a single mum and I live with my youngest son who is 11 and has complex needs. ... (97 replies)

... Hi! I am 7 days post-op from a Austin and Akins (not sure of spelling there) bunionectomy. Also, the bone was shaved on the side and my tendons & sesamoid bones moved. I have two screws placed in my foot that will be removed later. I was placed in a soft cast yesterday. I am to wear an osteo boot over the cast anytime I walk anywhere. The first week I was NWB. I elevate... (6 replies)
... I had a scarf and akins osteotomy on the 15th of this month (courtesy of BUPA) so I'm now 11 days on. I am not sure if there is something odd about me but I have had no pain in my foot at all after the first 36 hours. I have taken no painkillers since then either. I must be incredibly lucky or maybe there's a problem I am unaware of. The only sensation remotely like pain... (192 replies)
... Akins bunionectomy on my left foot. If your incisions are still bleeding at this stage, I would definitely have the doctor check it out. ... (2 replies)

... Hi there :) , Like you said everyone is different, I had one surgery in Nov. of last year and have problems with my big toe. The podiatrist tried to fix it in May of this year but it didn't help.So then I had bunion, bunionette and hammertoe surgery on my other foot in June of this year and am still recovering. It is a VERY long healing process. I wish you luck and I... (1 replies)
... Hi I am new here. I had Mann/Akins bunion surgery 10 weeks ago and I would like to hear from those of you who have had this type of surgery. I know that everybody heals differently and that there are many variables so I am not comparing my situation to anyone else. I am just wondernig how long it took others before they were able to bend their big toe and walk pain-free. Mine... (1 replies)

... Hi, I'm new to this board and I have a few questions that I hope some of you can answer for me. On Monday I had a bunionectomy on my right foot - Rt Manns & Akins is what the doctor called it. My foot is wrapped in a band and I am wearing a "bunion shoe". The x-rays that the doctor took on Tuesday look good - I can't believe how straight the toe is!! The doctor told me that I... ... Hi all! I have been reading the boards here for the past couple of days and I have to say I have got tons of info!!! I am having bunion surgery this upcoming Friday. I believe I am having the Austin/Akins Bunionectomy. Has anyone had this? Can you tell me your experience? Also I am wondering if anybody can tell me what to expect going into this. Like what happened when you... (1 replies)
... My only rational thought for being in a cast for six weeks is that if a person brakes their arm or leg...they would be in a cast for six weeks to heal. In my case, the metatarsal had wedge of bone removed, realigned, and set with screws to heal. Sounds to me like others on this message board had the same type of surgery done...and yet walked soon thereafter. Hm-m-m-m. (6 replies)
... I also lucked into seeing a sports medicine surgeon specializing only on ankles and feet (I say lucked into this because I didn't know any better when I first saw him). I saw a podiatrist first, and didn't like him, so tried an orthopedic surgeon next. Much better bedside manner. He said he performed two types of bunion surgery - one for minor bunions, one for major. ... (6 replies)
... It is crazy how different people's experiences are. I wonder how much is due to the severity of the bunions to start out with, the kind of surgery performed, and/or the doctor's philosophy about the recovery process. In May I had surgery on both my feet for "significantly" severe bunions and hammertoes on the toes which had been pushed up by my big bent toes. (I am 57 and had... (6 replies)
... I was able to walk from Day 1 in the osteo boot after both of my bunionectomies/hammertoe surgeries done 3 weeks apart in July. Painful, yes, but not impossible. I tried to keep the walking down to a bare minimum, as trips to the bathroom from the bed, to the computer to check my e-mail, to the kitchen to heat up TV dinners, to the surgeon's office for weekly check-ups, etc. I... ... on June 13th. My big toe is still stiff even after 3 weeks of therapy. I am now one week post op bunionectomy on my left foot. While I was sedated for that surgery, my OS "manipulated" the big toe on the right foot to get more "movement" in there. ... (4 replies)
