... Penk and others, My DH has an aortic aneurysm and has been followed with watchful waiting for 3 years at Mayo. His aneurysm is now at 4.8 cm. They said the risk of rupture at that size is 4 to 5%. DH will have endovascular stent surgery for the condition in October. He will only be in the hospital one day and have a fast recovery.( I posted in another place on this thread to... (19 replies)
... I'm not always as careful or 'aortic conscience' as I should be. Frankly, the thought of the surgery scares the bejippers out of me. ... I think the 4.5 5o 5.0 cm. for aortic arch aneurism in Marfan's will be the "optional" point at least until they can get the risk of a graft down to near zero and perhaps some sort of percutaneous procedure instead of the open heart surgery (never a walk in the park.) Of course, for an individual surgeon who needs a new Mercedes or a 4th house, perhaps a lower number might... (19 replies)
... Oh my gosh, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I watched my mother die of lung cancer (no, she didn't smoke, but my dad did) and I know the shock and feeling of unreality as it happens before your eyes and there is little you can do. I fully agree with your dad about coming home for his final days. Nothing can be done for him in the hospital at this point, so why not be... (19 replies)
... Lenin, I sometimes wonder if Marfan patients should have the surgery sooner than 5 cm. It will pobably be changed to 4.5 cm in the future as guideline keeps changing. It has always been a concern for me and now that I'm in my 40's, I'm really wondering. With my weak heart though, I'm not sure I would even survive a major operation like Aortic repair. It's a catch 22. I... (19 replies)
... jj, A friend of mine has a 3 cm. AAA and the doctors just keep checking it. Although doctors and hospitals differ, around 5 cm. (give or take) is where the surgery usually comes into play because at the 5 cm. size the risk of rupture begins to increase dramatically. I imagine many people are walking around with "undiagnosed 3's." (19 replies)
