Thrush? what is it?
Dec 30, 2000
I'm wondering exactly what thrush is. I have had only one possible "risky" situation about 2 months ago. I used protection but gave and received oral sex (no protection). I have had no specific symptoms (besided some extreme stressing over this) besides recently I have gotten a mild sore throat and maybe a little swelling in my neck. Also, I have some white coating of some sort on my tongue. Its not severe by any means, and I read that if you thrush you can actually scrape or brush it off. I cannot brush off this white looking texture. Its only on the top of my tongue, and its more pronounced near the back of my tongue towards my throat. I've never really concentrated on my tongue before, so I don't know if this is normal under some sort of sickness or under extreme stress?? Is this thrush? If you had thrush, would you know if for sure, or no? Also, does thrush go away by itself or do you need medication? Any help is greatly appreciated. What are the odds from contraction from this one time incident???? thanks.
Johnny,

Basically, your encounter was low risk. You used protection for the intercourse and oral sex is considered a low risk activity.

Almost everyone has white coating to a degree on their tongue - it is a build up of bacteria. Unless it is severely white all over (and not just at the back where everyone has this "deposit") you could maybe consider thrush as a diagnosis. In your situation, however, I very much doubt you have thrush. It is not normally seen in the early stages of HIV anyway.

You don't say if the person who you had the encounter with was HIV positive, although the odds of contracting HIV from this encounter are very small as you used a condom for the penetrative sex. Continue to do this and you should remain HIV negative.

If you are worried about infection take a test to put your mind at ease, otherwise I wouldn't worry about it too much this time.

Good luck and best wishes,

Rachael
