Hydroxyzine?
Dec 14, 2003
I recently was prescribed Hydroxyzine by my ENT for my dizziness and nausea due to ear infection. Has anyone else been prescribed this medication and has it worked? I've been on it for four days now and have seen some improvement.

I've had problems since August. It started with a sudden onset of nausea and dizziness while I was sitting in a restaurant. I felt like I was going to vomit or pass out. I've had the same symptoms off and on now since August. I've also had some ear pain. Antibiotics have been no help.

I was diagnosed with an inner ear infection. I also have some noise in my ears, but not much. Sometimes it feels like I have fluid in my ears. My biggest problem is the dizziness and nausea. Another problem that I found odd was the fact that I felt dizzy and nausea while listening to music. It felt like the bass really bothered my ears. The dizziness and nausea come in waves.

The ENT told me that the hydroxyzine is supposed to rest the inner ear. I don't know if it will work or not. I'm looking for anything at this point. It's been almost five months now of suffering with this.

..."Has anyone else been prescribed".....

..."and has it worked?"........

Short list of the drugs that are may be used to prevent and treat vomiting:

dimenhydrinate (Dramamine)
several clizines (e.g., cyclizine)
diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
promethazine
hydroxyzine (Vistaril)

Hydroxyzine is normally used to treat the nausea and vomiting which are some of the symptoms of your underling inner ear problem.

Yes---it was prescribed for me---in the beginning(Jul 02) of the VN W/BPPV---but did not take it---since it was prescribed to be used only if necessary---never felt---it was necessary---since the vertigo stopped---after day or two---and just the dizziness/unbalanced/rocking feeling remained---that all left---over time---and was completely gone---by the 13/14 month....... Never had any real sensitivity to sound/fluid in ear(s), etc... through out it all.
