Inner Ear Disorders Message Board
Hello. I am a 25 year old male and I have been having some very odd symptoms for the last month or so.
This all started Sunday the night before Labor Day (September 1st). I'm sitting at my computer completely still playing a video game when suddenly the room started spinning and tumbling. I tried to get up and make it to my bedroom to lay down but the room was tumbling so badly I had trouble walking. I made it to my bedroom and laid down, and I started to get extremely nauseous and sweaty. After about 30 minutes the spinning slowed down and I fell asleep.
When I awoke the next morning I no longer had vertigo just some slight dizziness, but I was extremely nauseous. I would describe how I felt like how you feel when you have food poisoning: sweaty but cold, nauseous, on the verge of vomiting. Now the odd part here is that this feeling lasted for several days. I was sick Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and then by Thursday I felt like myself again. I have been doing a lot of research on inner ear disorders and it seems abnormal to be nauseous for days after a vertigo attack. Most of what I have read makes it sound like people are usually sick with the vertigo/dizziness, but not bed ridden for days later.
So like I said, I felt great by Thursday and I just attributed it to food poisoning or something similar that I got over. I went back to work on Thursday and had a good day at work, and everything was fine. That night I got home and sat down on the couch to watch TV. Out of nowhere, it happened again. The room started tumbling and turning and I felt like I was going to vomit. This time I was prepared and I took a couple Dramamine which helped with the vertigo and dizziness and nausea and it knocked me out.
I awoke the next morning (Friday September 6th) feeling nauseous again and a bit dizzy. The nausea wasn't as bad this time but enough that I called out of work and made a doctors appointment for Monday the 9th.
By Monday I was feeling pretty normal when I went into the doctor. She checked my ears for fluid which she said she couldn't see, and told me I had BPPV and sent me home with a prescription to Meclizine. Once I got home I started doing research on BPPV and quickly realized this is not at all what I have. BPPV is triggered by moving the head and during vertigo it can usually be made better or worse by moving the head. I know for a fact I was sitting perfectly still both times I got vertigo. I've tried moving my head around and performing an exercise I found online that is suppose to trigger BPPV with no results.
Since that second episode of vertigo, my symptoms have been less intense but more constant. The best way I can describe it, is it seems like my symptoms have equalized. Instead of huge vertigo attacks and then a couple days or no vertigo, I now have mild to moderate dizziness and nausea but it's just about every day. Just about everyday (or close to it) I am somewhat dizzy and nauseous, although the symptoms go up and down throughout the day. Yesterday I woke up and was pretty dizzy and nauseous and then as the day went on I felt a lot better. Then later yesterday evening my right ear started to feel "plugged up" like it needs to pop or something and the dizziness came back.
Today I woke up with pressure in my right ear again feeling dizzy and nauseous, but as the day went on I do feel a little better. I've made another appointment for Friday to get some bloodwork done to rule out thyroid issues or anything else it may be. After that it looks like I will probably be going to a specialist.
Maybe a week ago I had a very brief episode of Tinnitus which only lasted about 20 seconds. I am not sure if that was anything abnormal though because occasional brief Tinnitus is pretty common. From what I have read Tinnitus associated with ear disorders usually is constant and more frequent.
Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Both my doctor and I found it very odd that after the 2 episodes of vertigo I was sick for several days. Sorry for such a long post, I just wanted to be thorough.
