For the past several years I have had a feeling of pressure in my lower right abdomen area like a water balloon under my right rib cage. My liver enzyme blood tests are normal and all blood tests come back healthy?? My doctor said it might be a fatty liver because I am a recovering alcoholic (I am 10 years sober now). I also had a ultrasound and everything came back normal? I have been to several doctors and they said you can't "feel organs" so I am confused? What could I be feeling? What is going one? Any thoughts?????
First, let me say 'WOW! Congratulations on your 10 years being sober'! I admire your strength. Be proud!
As for your question, I would consider keep going to your doctor until they give you some kind of medical diagnosis on this. You know your body best. If something doesn't feel right, keep going back or try another dr. I know this is probably not what you wanted to hear.
I'm not sure what else they can do besides a scan or lab work...more likely, a biopsy of the liver. You say your dr. says it 'could' be a fatty liver. If it were me, I'd want more information than 'could' be.
Good luck to you and many blessings. Wish I had a definitive answer for you.
Have you tried checking your back out? I had a "knot" in my back that was pressing on a nerve that led right under my right ribcage. It felt similar to what you are describing (water baloon feeling). I did not have any pain, just pressure. I took a tennis ball and massaged the knot until the pressure subsided. Have someone press on your back and ask them if they can feel a knot, you will know right away because the pressure will suddenly go away.

I have been having the same exact feeling for quite a long time and have had many tests done and everything comes back normal. What have you found out lately about your condition?
I dont know what to say because I have the feeling but they did say I have fibrosis which I dont drink so am unsure why I got it so bad now. All I know is that I am in so much pain. I also have other pain with my stomach and have been to many doctors which everyone makes me feel like it is in my head well I finally got a doctor to finally figure it out so my advice never give up keep trying to find that doctor there is one out there. Never thing it is in your head beleive me I about gave up but someone told me this so I am passing it on.
Wow so many responses with the same reply, makes you wonder about some of our health care providers. Congrats on the sobriety! I was told the same thing that you were for several years and was told that it was self induced pain due to hypochondria and that I was depressed, yeah right I love life. I would suggest that if your doctor does not go through the necessary channels to get you an MRI w/contrast dye that you demand it of your insurance company. As far as not "feeling" organs under your skin, hogwash, you will be able to feel the distension from a swollen Liver quite easily just under the curve of your small ribs. You are your best advocate and I wish you the best and please keep us posted. God Bless.
I have had the same pressure and can feel something that moves around. Guess you could say it is like a water balloon. Have had all the test done Ultrasound, hida scan, cat scan, blood work just to name a few but they have all came back normal. This is very frustrating as I am sure you all know. Has anyone found out anything new that they could share as I feel like I am going crazy. If we are all having the same problem it can't just be "all in our head".:(
I posted earlier and still have not found out anything that could be wrong with me. I had a cat scan and the nurse that was helping me had the same problems and suggested that I try going gluten free. It helped her when no one could figure out what was wrong with her. Anyway I have been off gluten for about a week and feel better already. The pressure is gone and the water balloon feeling is going away. She said it took her about 4 months to feel completely better but in one week i feel better than I have in a year. Just thought I would share maybe it is gluten or wheat sensitivity. The test that they do for celiac disease doesn't show basic intolerance to gluten so it will come back negative. I even saw this on Doctor Oz. Just thought I would try to help.
I don't have much info for you in response to the original question posed but need to let you know that if you are feeling pain / having issues you absolutely need to seek a second, third, fourth, etc opinion!
I had been having pain in my chest and back region and spent 12 months going to various doctors who told me it was "just reflux". I would go back as the meds they provided did nothing, this sage continued until eventually I had a gastroscopy which found something indenting in my stomach. Finally I rejoiced! However the doc who did the gastroscopy decided to just ignore it.... a fifth opinion saw me have two CT Scans and an MRI. Lo and behold a tennis ball sized tumour was found on my liver!
After six months since the gastroscopy I finally went to see a liver surgeon who still couldn't rule out cancer. I had it removed and fortunately it was a bengn adenoma.
Long story I know but my point is that you know your body best so I urge you all to follow your issues up - it is not "all in your mind" as we are often left to feel.
I know that my story isn't an isolated one, many others have been through the same situation - this is evident by the many stories in this liver disorders section of this website.
I just started to have the same symptoms as everyone else. I am scheduling a Dr's visit soon as it is very uncomfortable. I started to have a tightness across my chest first, evertime I breathed in and just recently started to have the pain under my lower right rib cage. I was recently diagnosed with GERD and am taking Prilosex daily. I was experiencing very severe pain in the middle of my chest as well as under the left rib cage (not the right). It appeared that the Prilosex was working fine (been taking it for 6 months) and all of a sudden I started to get a pain across my chest when I breathed in. Now I started to experience the same pain as the rest of you under the right rib cage. Just a few things you may want to check that I didn't see mentioned:
1) possible GERD - 2) heart/blood pressure meds (I'm taking hydrochlorothorazide and lipatur) - 3) possible ulcer (it feels like an ulcer - sharp burning, aching feeling).
I will report back. I do not believe in just accepting these things because the tests show nothing wrong; something is not right and it interferes with your quality of life. Many of you should change your doctors as they don't seem they know what they are doing. Maybe check with an Internist?
Hope 2010 brings good news on this subject.
Hi, It seems lots of people have this mystery pain under right rib. I too have been suffering from it. I've read many of these replys and have been researching. Please don't laugh but may I suggest worms, particularly a type of tape worm found in rodents that attack a human liver. My cats have tape worms, I recently discovered and they eat mice, voles, birds, etc.. I am going to do a herbal wormer for me and clear them up in my pets. Unfortuneately fleas are part of the life cycle (it's gross) and so they have to be eliminated if you don't want your animals reinfected. I will let you know if the worm treatment works, meanwhile I'm going to another doctor today to pick his brain and eliminate things like hepC, gall stones, etc. I've had tons of test all fine and normal done around 3 years ago when I had the first episode. This is my 3rd episode. My diet is very fairly low fat and all wholefoods, very little corn syrup and additives. I did break my tailbone as a teenand have degenerative disc in my back as a result, it could be related. I've been told about the rib cartledge inflammation but I believe that should be around the breast bone not right side. Good (or bad) to know I am not alone, still scary. D
i had the same problem it was the meds thier had me on good luck
We just found out my husband has Liver damage. It should have been picked up years ago but his doctor never picked up on it. We changed doctors and are now on our second specialist. We now know what he has and are working together to get him well. Don't give up or settle for anything less. You know your body better than anyone else. We could of changed doctors sooner and didn't. "My husband's liver is badly damaged by our trust in our D.O." Don't wait!!!!!!!
