Lung & Respiratory Disorders / COPD Board Index

Hello,

I am a 19 year old female college student in good health, but in June 2007 I was at the drive-in with friends and pretty scrunched up in the back seat, and all of a sudden I couldn't get a full, satisfying breath in. I was freaking out and crying, which just made it worse, and my boyfriend took me home and I woke my parents up and we went to the ER. They took an EKG test (I think that's what it was) and a lung test, and x-rays, and I did a peak flow breathing test thing and everything turned out fine. They told me that I was just hyperventilating and it was due to stress or something. Well, hundreds of dollars in hospital bills later, the symptons occasionally come back. I'm not under anymore stress than any other average college student. Right now I am having a really hard time getting a full breath in and I feel like I have to yawn to get a full breath. When I try to breathe so deeply, my chest really hurts. When I finally do get the rare good breath in, it only lasts for a few seconds before I feel like I need to gasp for another one. What is this!?!?! :(It is really frustrating! Also, I have never been exactly in tip-top shape but I have always been able to do what I needed to, but lately just walking up a flight of stairs makes my heart race and makes me feel like I cannot breathe! I don't know if this last part may just be because I am out of shape, but not being able to get a full breath and getting short of breath after the simplest activites is really frustrating!!!! My symptoms get worse at night, and I feel like I am going to have broken ribs from breathing so hard!!! Does anybody know what this is!?!?!

SarahBerah,

I would first ask your doc to prescribe you some anxiety meds to see if it subsides the sob sensation. If that does not help, ask you doc get you a Barium Swallow and Upper GI xray, it sounds like you might have a Hiatal Hernia, I just had those tests done due to similiar sob and I'm waiting fot my results today, mine may be Acid Reflux\Stomach related too. Look up Hiatal Hernia cause and symptoms. Good Luck and God Bless
